He is pretty much proud of the fact he doesn't look like the pretty boy actor - it gets him much better roles, and avoids type casting. It's like cracking that Neil Patrick Harris is gay...kills the punch line when they own it.

I wouldn't say it avoids type casting, it pretty much became his type casting and that's how he was able to get in so many productions and make a name for himself. That he gradually became famous is what allows him to choose varied roles now.

type casting is being unable to branch out, it's much more extreme, and makes you avoid the break out role

like Fraiser (no name needed, Grammer was always Fraiser), or Matthew Mcconaughey (goofy pretty boy), or Nicole Kidman (romantic comedy/hot ditzy chick) - yeah, most actors get stuck in a "rut" but Boardwalk Empire was definitely the break-out role if none other. Even Connery was "type cast". You can make some nit pick arguments yes, but his talent got him away from the term "type cast"
