That was the most hypnotic and calming gif I've ever seen.

[–]TazerSquid 28 points29 points ago

Excellent! Soon I will contact you and you will send me all your money. Soon.

[–]Druvan 10 points11 points ago

Even more hypnotic with sound

[–]DUbro 2 points3 points ago

this was on go great good day submit to sumition no talk english well :)

[–]aripp 1 point2 points ago

Thank you

[–]al0newestand 1 point2 points ago

It drives me crazy that the light on the left jerks slightly before moving away on the way back.

[–]gingerbear 3 points4 points ago

...that didn't involve boobs

[–]3uphemism 36 points37 points ago

[–]MyNameIsHax 18 points19 points ago

But I want one for my room.

[–]teeohdeedee123[S] 1 point2 points ago

And now this article links to this thread. You should feel like you've accomplished something here.

[–]orange_kevin 2 points3 points ago

That noise it makes is one of the most amazing noises ever.

[–]thatTigercat 350 points351 points ago

You've made the mistake of mentioning Edison without both bashing him and circlejerking over Tesla, so I'm afraid this isn't going to turn out well.

Edit: for the haters, id rather deal with some greedy asshole that goes after patents and actually brings the relevant technology to the rest of the world than some jackass mad scientist that took a lot his schematics with him to the grave leaving the rest of us with dick and squat.

[–]feureau 79 points80 points ago

Dude, you've jumped from mentioning Edison, skip the circlejerk and bash, then went straight on bashing the circlejerk. WTF, man/woman! \o/

[–]revoopychris 14 points15 points ago

You forgot that Tesla had some crazy idea about some group of people.

[–]Firehippo782 1 point2 points ago

why dont we like edison? i dont recall ever hearing any edison bashing before...

[–]morpheousmarty 0 points1 point ago

This sums it up. But it is not the source.

[–]gingernick17 14 points15 points ago

I'm far from great at electrical engineering, but is this possible to do this? Hypothetically, could you make an inductor-capacitor circuit to resonate between the bulbs, and use the induced magnetic field from the current in the wires to make the bulbs repel? Granted, this is the extent of my Circuits 101 knowledge, but imagine the sweet sweet karma..

[–]bradfordmaster 15 points16 points ago

If you look closely at the gif you'll see two black boxes just inside of each of the outside lightbulbs. One these boxes are two little nobs. Here's how I think it works:

the leftmost bulb swings into this block, triggering a momentary switch which informs a microcontroller (I'd bet 10 to 1 its an arduino), which then turns off the light on the left bulb, triggers the animation of lights through the middle bulbs, and then triggers a solenoid on the block on the right, which sends the rightmost bulb flying out.

[–]SalamBro 4 points5 points ago

If you look at the left-most and right-most bulbs there seems to be some type of button that they hit. I imagine this tells the bulbs when to turn on and off and it is simply coordinated to look as if the energy transfers directly.

[–]Dasoccerguy 0 points1 point ago

I'm glad someone else was trying to puzzle out exactly what's happening here. It's obvious after about a second that more than momentum is at work. My guess is that there are wire coils in the thick part right above the bulbs and the current to power the bulb induces a magnetic field there. And if you were going to use a resonator circuit to do this, I'd imagine you'd need at least one per bulb. Then again, I'm a noob too, so there's probably some other amazingly simple way to do it all.

[–]Cyborg771 3 points4 points ago

No, it's much more likely that there is a sensor in the first and last bulbs that detects the impact and just flips all the lights inbetween at a predetermined rate.

[–]GMKO 0 points1 point ago

Hmm yeah, I know some of those words

[–]StewieForPrez 14 points15 points ago

Please tell me I wasn't the only watching, waiting for the momentum to slow down??

I was thoroughly impressed at how well that kept its movement without slowing!

(Stupid gifs and their magic looping pictures)

[–]dave0616 3 points4 points ago

The device itself does not slow, when the light comes down it hits a switch that looks like it is an actuator as well. So the light comes down hits the switch light travels to the other side actuator activates pushes the light bulb then repeats in reverse.

[–]fuck__karma 10 points11 points ago

The transfer of kinetic energy between solids (the glass) is basically instantaneous, so the delayed motion of the two end bulbs makes the gif seem a little... off. Cool idea though

[–]Redard 4 points5 points ago

And if you watch the video that 3uphemism posted, you'll notice that none of the middle bulbs are moving. So even if the end bulb is still recoiling from the last hit, it gets "hit" again by a motionless bulb without fail. I'm pretty certain it's being moved by a motor, and not by the other bulbs.

[–]SalamBro 11 points12 points ago

This is actually how newtons cradle works the middle balls (or bulbs in this case) don't move.

[–]nomofica 8 points9 points ago

If you actually watched the video, you can see that the bulbs on the end don't actually hit the middle bulbs to transfer energy like the Newton's Cradle does. In fact, the bulbs don't touch at all (or enough to make any sort of energy transfer to push the other end bulb).

The concept of the whole thing is a play on the Newton's Cradle, but does not actually function like one.

[–]SalamBro 4 points5 points ago

Ah yes I see your point (I apologize for my earlier comment). It seems as if they are hitting a button with the "stem" (I'm not sure what the white part is called) and that triggers the subsequent light show. It does appear, however that both bulbs are attached to wires and I imagine that it would be inefficient (and far more risky with bulbs being so fragile) to have the wires be motorized. I'm not sure but perhaps the "buttons" on each side are actually magnets which switch which side the charge is on after a set period of time?

[–]nomofica 2 points3 points ago

That's my guess. There is a metal contact on these black object that touches the outside of the light sockets, which I presume are electromagnets that propel the bulbs outward and then trigger the inner bulbs when the outer bulbs return. Wouldn't be surprised if the display was programmed on something like an arduino.

Say it's about 1.5 feet or half a meter from one end to the other. We'll call it close enough because of just how damn fast sound travels.

The speed of sound in air is around 340 m/s.

The time it takes a sound wave to travel half a meter is (0.5)/(340) = 0.00147 seconds

Say the video was shot at 30fps. Each frame is 0.03333... seconds long.

So the sound could travel from one end to the other about (0.033333)/(0.00147) = ~22.6 times before it would even be possible to tell the difference, and that's before it was converted into a shitty .gif file.

By my estimate if sound was travelling as slow as it is in the gif it would be ~500 times slower than it actually is.

Next time please think about what you're saying and do some research before you make a post like this.

[–]AKashehole 15 points16 points ago

First, if it's 0.5 meters from one end to the other, the distance the energy travels is not 0.5 meters. The lightbulbs are a vacuum, and therefore the energy must travel through the glass around the circumference of the bulb. So multiply 0.5 meters by 0.5 pi, and you have the distance traveled by the KE. Second, the energy is not travelling through air, so the speed of sound in air is not relevant. The average speed of sound in glass is 5640 m/s. This is much faster than in air, as air is far less dense than glass.

Next time please think about what you're saying and do some research before you make a post like this.

[–]phider 6 points7 points ago

Touche. It's been a while since I took a real physics course and I didn't want to do a whole lot of work when a rough estimate would show that it was off by a few orders of magnitude. I admit I am a dumbass for not thinking about the speed of sound through air vs. glass.

[–]AKashehole 1 point2 points ago

Wow. To be honest, I expected an angry reply. Thank you for keeping your cool, and good luck in your future scientific threads.

[–]Luminescence9 6 points7 points ago

I liked your post up until you started sounding like a condescending asshole.

[–]phider 1 point2 points ago

Damn it I want to respond to this but I can't think of anything to say that doesn't make me sound like an asshole again.

[–]stanf007 20 points21 points ago

It shouldn't work that way you think(transferring energy). There has to be an on and off switch to each light bulb.

[–]SomeDeviant 13 points14 points ago

You can see black boxes in the .gif, which appear to be switches and what's pushing the lights.

[–]orange_kevin 7 points8 points ago

You shouldn't be downvoted. You are correct.

There's a closeup in there where you can see the light push the switch in as it 'lands' and then get ejected out by the same switch.

As for on/off switches for each bulb, (aiming this at stanf007) that's what the wires they're hanging from are for. It's an art piece, not a bloody display of physics!

[–]stanf007 0 points1 point ago

Thank you for the link.

[–]Nohoshi 10 points11 points ago

[–]Corsair857 10 points11 points ago

Don't destroy our sense of childish wonderment. Asshole. :)

[–]K4ge 2 points3 points ago

That sense is what leads us to find out how it actually works. Asshole.

[–]stanf007 -4 points-3 points ago

Same way religion works huh? Don't worry, you'll grow up one day.

[–]typon 0 points1 point ago

Really??

[–]duckduckmooses 0 points1 point ago

When the left side lights up it looks like a pac ma for a split second.

[–]roflswithcopters 0 points1 point ago

Anyone have a higher res source of this?

[–]Stember 0 points1 point ago

I can look at this forever...

[–]CookPu 2 points3 points ago

I just tried this... The outcome was a little different for me: 11 broken light bulbs.

[–]bioman334 -4 points-3 points ago

[–]animeman05 38 points39 points ago

No inventions are made in a vacuum they are all improvements of previous contributions and Edison (or his company) did improve the light bulb.

[–]kirkt 13 points14 points ago

"That lightbulb you developed? You didn't invent that!"

[–]Beanz94 3 points4 points ago

Next you'll be telling me he didn't invent the electric hammer, or the 6-legged chair!

[–]MustBeARedditor 2 points3 points ago

You read Le Oatmeal too?!?!? We're such intellectuals lol!

[–]CoachSnigduh 4 points5 points ago

It states that Edison "simply figured out how to sell the light bulb." He is also world famous for it. Now, which is more valuable to you, making a very profitable business out of a good product and becoming famous for it, or actually inventing the product? Wealth and fame or nothing? To me, they're both genius.

What the fuck? That looks cool, but wtf?

[–]unohoo09 7 points8 points ago

Furries.

[–]AbsurdWebLingo 8 points9 points ago

[–]Montisa2008 5 points6 points ago

Are they nice?

[–]unohoo09 5 points6 points ago

From what I hear. I don't know much about them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furry_fandom

[–]Marshfellow 0 points1 point ago

Ask them yourself, there is a furry subreddit. /r/furry believe it or not. And as far as I can tell it is part fetish, part just really wanting to role play as a half animal. They seem pretty nice.

[–]Montisa2008 2 points3 points ago

Interesting. I never knew about that, i guess there is a thing for everyone.

[–]Marshfellow 0 points1 point ago

Indeed. It isn't necessarily a fetish though, /r/furry is a pg-13 subreddit (/r/yiff is the porn one, it is in the sidebar). I include this comment because I know some become angry when people look at them as "perverts" or strictly fetishists or whatever when many just really like the role-playing aspect, and I want to be spared the downvote from what I believe is an actually surprisingly large furry base here on reddit.

[–]Diggrefuge1 1 point2 points ago

It's kind of interesting that both Newton and Tesla, two of the greatest scientific minds in history, were celibate.

[–]ucstruct 1 point2 points ago

Tesla is not one of the greatest scientific minds in history, and is in no way comparable to Newton. He was a great engineer but didn't really invent any grand scientific theories - the credit for the work going into Tesla's was largely Michael Faraday (along with others, like Maxwell).

[–]Takingbackmemes 0 points1 point ago

It was fashionable at the time.

[–]IAmNotYourBoss 1 point2 points ago

So was Lemaitre. I would imagine that the whole "time not spent sexing or taking care of kids" aspect is helpful in that matter.

That being said, Einstein was a fucking horndog.

[–]vanillablack26 0 points1 point ago

Watched the story of Tesla on Dark Matters over the weekend. This is pretty amazing stuff

[–]shrike71 1 point2 points ago

One of the coolest things I've seen on here in a while.

[–]M_Squared99 0 points1 point ago

I want this. OMG. Made my day.

[–]teeohdeedee123[S] 1 point2 points ago

I was originally planning on calling the post Tesla's Cradle, but decided it would be more fun to irk reddit. Glad it worked.

[–]fuckyourkarmabitch 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, while it was kind of a shit deal for Tesla, seeing all of these butthurt redditors is hilarious. Good call.

[–]amphlux 0 points1 point ago

Neat. Doable with some magnets and a microcontroller. Interesting piece.

[–]sadeq786 0 points1 point ago

That is officially the coolest thing I've seen

[–]clearlyreading 0 points1 point ago

How is this occurring!?!? SCIENCE PEOPLE COME TO MY ASSISTANCE!!

[–]Igotasnakeinmaboot 0 points1 point ago

The timing behind it must be rather complicated. Getting the lights in the middle to light up and off at the right time has to be perfect.

[–]x0mb13z 0 points1 point ago

This is perfect.

[–]RavenMFD 0 points1 point ago

I love how smooth the transition is.

[–]hoobsher 0 points1 point ago

what fucking sorcery is this

[–]Tophtech 1 point2 points ago

I must build this

[–]PokemasterTT 0 points1 point ago

Magic.

[–]airjordan2120 0 points1 point ago

I sat there for a good five minutes waiting for something else to happen.. Nothing happened.

[–]mike_Oxclong 0 points1 point ago

Science is so cool

[–]tazmaniac86 0 points1 point ago

Its weird... I feel like I can hear it. The sound of my air-conditioner (which is directly behind me) seems to get louder in the corresponding ear as the light goes from one side to the other.

[–]Appiedash -1 points0 points ago

Came to comments expecting Tesla. Was not disappointed.

[–]hbomberman 2 points3 points ago

Faith in humanity = still sucks

[–]iamthemindfreak -1 points0 points ago

Now they need to make a Tesla cradle. Complete with lightning

[–]SheesAreForNoobs 1 point2 points ago

Could watch that all day.

[–]aschen117 -1 points0 points ago

I cannot believe you assholes down voted my pro-Tesla comment.

Edison was nothing more than a CEO. Punk ass bitch.

He spent more time a the patent office than inventing. Predominately because he was a talentless hack.
