Clarification: a tesseract is four dimensional. This is a rotating 3d projection of one, analogous to a square being the shadow of a cube.

One more step of clarification: What you see here is the the 2D projection of the 3D projection of a 4D cube.

Wait a sec, if the 4th dimension is time, does that mean that a hyper cube is just a normal cube with double the vertices and the new vertices are on an offset of -0.5/0.5x the size of the cube and its just tweening between two states?

If thats correct wouldn't that mean that we're 4th dimensional entites? limited to only <=1x the normal speed rate of the universe? Also that would mean 3d entites are basically entities which have an x y and z size and are entirely static, which also makes 2d entities static.

Imagine a cube. The cross section is a square. Now say we cut that cube to infinitely small cross sections (infinitesimal). What do we have? An infinite number of squares! Humans are the "square" and our progression through time makes a "cube" -- in this analogy at least. We are 3rd dimensional entities. Our lives are the 4th dimensional entities.

Im retarded arent I?

Nah man, "the 4th dimension" in everyday speech is time. No doubt. jokes_on_you just meant that the hypercube (or "tesseract") is a shape with four spatial dimensions.

Be easy :D

No one who wishes to be taken seriously refers to the 4th dimension as "time" unless differentiating it from the spatial dimensions. I hate that discussing this is so complicated because people instantly think it's time, only time, and completely disregard that the point is an addition of a completely new SPATIAL dimension.

[–]spacetime_sundaeCosmic 0 points1 point ago

I could see that being irritating. This is just a case where multiple conventions collide: one practical, one technical.

In physics, the spatial dimensions and (almost always one) time dimension are added up: 11-dimensional supergravity, for example.

In practice, human experience is in 4-dimensions. It's clear that the number of spatial dimensions are 3.

It's not worth getting irritated about, imo. The fact that when talking about this highly specific subject, one has to make sure one makes clear that one is talking about extra spatial dimensions certainly doesn't make the listener ignorant.

So, I mean this in the nicest way possible :)

edit: forgot a word

You should read the book The Fourth Dimension by Rudy Rucker, a professor at Rutgers (wonder how he chose that school). It's really interesting, it's a story that takes place in 4 dimensions. The fourth dimension is spatial just like any other dimension, only it's not one we can see.

That's what my buddy said!
