Funny... as someone who doesn't enjoy either sport, I have the exact same message to both sides of the discussion.

[–]jocarbart 1 point2 points ago

I salute you, or curtsey, or both. Hell. Whatever chaps the ass's of both groups.

[–]Monktushu5 -2 points-1 points ago

Seriously, this needs to stop.

[–]Ihatemimes 16 points17 points ago

I would rather play Soccer than Football and rather watch Football than Soccer.

Love is an unlimited resource.

"No tickey, no laundry" would have been better. Just to fuck with everyone.

RUGBY WOOOOOOO!

[–]gayunicornrainbows 3 points4 points ago

Why do so many mainstream American males (ie. white, non-hispanic, non-immigrant) actually despise soccer?

And I don't mean just aren't interested in it, but literally feel a need to belittle the sport and peer pressure other Americans to not watch soccer whenever it enters the mainstream conscience (world cup, euro cup...etc)?

Have you seen the crowd at a Portland Timber's game? Aunt Polly's fence isn't that white.

I think it's that, traditionally, American football & soccer are during the same sport season in elementary/middle/highschool, where the seeds of rivalry are planted ("Oh, you play soccer instead of football? Pussy") etc.

Also, as a fan of neither sport, I can't stand watching soccer/Euro football players try to draw yellow & red cards during a game. It literally makes me uncomfortable it's so forced & cuntlike.

I'm going to assume you're not American (correct me if I'm wrong, please).

Soccer is not hated here in mainstream US; it's just second fiddle to a lot of other sports ((American) football (both US and collegiate), baseball, basketball, hockey (depending on what part of the country), golf, etc.). Why? Honestly mainly because we're not that good. Our hardcore soccer fans would rather watch European soccer than MLS because the players are better. Second, yes, we do feel that "futbol" is less of a physical challenge than "football," and therefore less of a "manly" sport. Every play in football ends with someone either scoring or getting knocked to the ground, but when someone lands on the ground in soccer the opposition gets a penalty. That being said, I played both sports in HS. I do feel that football is rougher than soccer because you're always getting hit and are guaranteed a few bumps and bruises. However, soccer is played with a lot less protective equipment, so while the odds of getting seriously injured are less, your injury might be more severe (I once got kicked in the head while playing keeper. It wouldn't have been that bad in football because of the helmets).

While Euro League was on a lot of my friends were excited about it and were posting about it on Facebook (granted; I'm a college-aged male, sop my sample size is biased). I'm of German descent, so I was pulling for Germany; a lot of people do something similar here for Euro Cup or World Cup (once the US is eliminated) because of our ethnic diversity. In general however we have a short attention span with soccer, so most of us only pay attention when it's things like the WC or EC. But of course, we still like to joke on it. I'm going to guess you were asking about stuff like this. IT'S A JOKE, don't take it too seriously.

[–]bGowRightNow -2 points-1 points ago

I ask this same question all the time?

[–]SubtlePineapple -3 points-2 points ago

Because those europeans are sooo susceptible to belittling!

Joking aside, if you actually think people actively try and convince their friends not to enjoy things, what you're seeing is a general state-of-being known as "douchebaggery".

Finally I'd like to add that virtually every kid who plays a sport as a child plays soccer, and probably some tee-ball as well. It's just the competitive sport we don't do.

[–]A_WILD_ABRA_APPEARED -1 points0 points ago

New Jersey loves soccer. So does the Pacific NW, from what I've heard. Not exactly high immigration zones.

[–]PatAunces -2 points-1 points ago

I don't think most people really despise it. I've never heard anyone say they hate soccer. I just think that the lack of a national soccer league means people don't watch the sport or take interest in it, in the same way no one here watches curling or rugby, and no-one where you are probably watches american football.

Now if you're talking about opinions on reddit, that's just a circlejerk. Once a few people have an opinion and get upvoted for it, it spreads, whether people actually feel that way or not, and it's almost always an absolute-opinion, like "I hate soccer", instead of "I don't really care about soccer". The internet makes asshats out of all of us.

[–]RelaxRelapse 4 points5 points ago

We do have a national soccer league though... It's called MLS.

[–]frostedwaffles 0 points1 point ago

Everyone enjoy your respective sports and leave other sports alone, because they are all difficult in their own ways.

[–]JokesPokes 0 points1 point ago

I would rather play, watch and game "soccer", but as a european, I love all night super bowl parties!

[–]s-mies 0 points1 point ago

I like both handegg and football too!

[–]scumbag-reddit 0 points1 point ago

You win.

[–]inmate655321 0 points1 point ago

I love them both.

[–]guiriguiri 0 points1 point ago

why is it that whenever the subject of soccer/football comes up, we get a bunch of butt-hurt americans "defending" their sports or culture as superior, and a bunch of condescending europeans criticizing the us for calling it soccer? somehow whenever there is a rivalry between the us and everywhere else in the world, it becomes so important that our national pride itself is at stake.

BASEBALL

[–]djslim21 0 points1 point ago

it's even boring in bold...

[–]doyoulikebread -1 points0 points ago

The funniest thing about this back and forth is the timing of the posts. The American football bashing one was posted during the American night, guaranteeing that European, Asian, and Australian redditors see it and upvote it while the star-spangled giant sleeps. Once the monster rubbed it's eyes awake and saw one of its beloved sports being bashed at the top of r/gifs, it roared with a force of a thousand upvotes and unleashed its fury of a rebuttal post.

[–]hungrydrunk -1 points0 points ago

That's more like it.

[–]aheadwarp9 -1 points0 points ago

I thought it was spelled "futbol"

[–]LordWhat -5 points-4 points ago

As an australian... i think i still win

[–]MasterBistro 1 point2 points ago

I watched rugby the other day at a pho restaurant (yeah I'm not sure either) and couldn't help thinking, from someone who has no clue what the rules are, that it looks a lot like soccer being played with everyone being the goalie.

[–]LordWhat 1 point2 points ago

rugby is pretty weird, but i'm talking about aussie rules football, or AFL. which is the greatest game in the world.

[–]Kruschevez 1 point2 points ago

I approve of this message. It's quite possibly the only sport that looks even more testosterone filled than gridiron to me.

[–]LordWhat -1 points0 points ago

There is no sport more epic and manly than AFL. i say this as a woman.

[–]xbuzzbyx -3 points-2 points ago

Soccer = Kickball
Football = Throwball

That's all I recognize them as.
