Basically it's mind fucking because you are expecting a certain foot to land before the other. The trick is, his right foot (camera left) is supposed to land first, but he rotates it again thus landing the left foot (camera right) first.

Its the right foot that is doing all the work, if you watch his left foot, it goes where you expect it to.

He just spun his left leg extra while doing a cartwheel.

Watch one leg at a time. The left leg does exactly what you'd expect, while the right leg is the one doing all the fancy stuff. My hip hurts just looking at that, though.
