Explanation of what happend (from other thread):

To prevent mixing/contamination of the fluids beings transported tankers are thoroughly steam cleaned after being used.

Physics 101, if you heat a gas it expands, if you cool a gas it contracts. Heating a gas in a confined spaces creates pressure while cooling a gas in a confined space creates a vacuum. The problem was that these cleaning crews would go steam clean the tanker during the day and seal it up to prevent any contamination. But when the temperature dropped during the night the steam would cool and create a vacuum.

Normally the vacuum would be pretty weak and would only result in a hatch refusing to open. Fun fact, a 12 inch diameter hatch under a 5 psi vacuum would require over 550 lbs of force to open. In rare situations the walls of the tanker would bow in a bit. What you see in this video is the MOST extreme situation. To achieve results like this you have to be trying to implode the tanker.

Edit: Additionally there are a lot of people that don't know how pressure works. My friends dad lost some guys at work because they opened a hatch that was about the size of a door which was under 3 psi of pressure. It was something like 10,000 lbs of force when you did the math. The hatch blew open, killing the two guys in front of it and was found almost a quarter mile away.

Subsequent investigation by forensic pathologists determined D4, being exposed to the highest pressure gradient, violently exploded due to the rapid and massive expansion of internal gases. All of his thoracic and abdominal organs, and even his thoracic spine were ejected, as were all of his limbs. Simultaneously, his remains were expelled through the narrow trunk opening left by the jammed chamber door, less than 60 centimetres (24 in) in diameter. Fragments of his body were found scattered about the rig.

Wow.

I was the one that wrote the original post in the other thread.

The door was to a testing chamber where companies could pressure test equipment for an inspector. Oil companies don't like getting faulty equipment so its not uncommon for them to send an inspector to inspect parts to make sure they're working properly before shipping them to the oil rig.

My buddys dad was one of these inspectors and that day they were testing a large valve that had been repaired. They guys operating the chamber thought they had depressurized the unit but there was still some pressure left. At first the latch wouldn't budge, so they got a large wrench and smacked the latch until it gave. The door which was pretty damn thick blew open and torn itself off the hinges, killing the two guys that beat it open.

[–]pandalust 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Honestly, if I was working with pressurized environments or vacuums I would take a latch not opening or a door not opening as a very very serious situation. Did they not have protocols for this happening?

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They do have protocols for this. If a hatch doesn't open on a pressurized vessel for any reason the crew will stop and triple check (the double check has already happened) to make sure that any positive or negative pressure has been relieved. Any injury to the crew for this is because of their own error or not following protocol.

Source: I work at a chemical plant with a lot of pressure vessels.

[–]pandalust 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hypothetically if the vessel is found to have a pressure which for whatever reason can't be released through the valves, what do you do then? drill a hole? small explosives?

[–]burburburbur 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You would NOT want to drill a hole in a pressurized pressure vessel. Once you compromise one point sufficiently it will explode. You can't just drill a hole and let it vent. Think of a balloon when you pop it with a pin, only the balloon is thick steel and under thousands of times more pressure in some cases.

Normally these things have pressure relief valves that are designed to open at set pressures (springs hold them closed until pressure is high enough to force the spring to compress opening a valve).

If somehow all the valves failed and stuck shut your only real hope is to shut down the pressurizing source and slowly vent it from that line.

If you had some hypothetical chamber with no inlets or outlets, all you can do is bury most of it and blow it up. From far away.

[–]NightOfTheHunter 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was a loader at a chemical plant. The loader is a crew of one, and a tank of this size takes more than one shift to load or offload; you can absolutely inherit a huge problem. Before any pressurized product can move in or out of the tank, two lines have to be connected, one liquid, one vapor. We dealt with high-ends gases, so each system had to be closed. (No such thing as opening a hatch, no contact with atmosphere.) This vessel has only one line connected and the tank isn't on the tracks. I don't believe it was accidental. I don't know nothin' about no protocol. Our operators had work ethics similar to Homer Simpson. I usually had to wake up the guy I was relieving. We never lost an operator while I was there, although I saw several outside contractors killed. I worked at one of the largest refineries in the country.

I worked with high pressure freezing of yeast cultures as a preparation for the transmission electron microscope. The HPF machine is one of the scariest things i've seen in a lab. It creates a pressure of 2100 bar (30457 psi) and looks like it was built by Blaise Pascal himself. It makes very loud and uncomfortable noises like it is going to burst into pieces any given second. In another lab they forgot the safeguard before turning it on, they accidently shot a solid metal rod in a multi-level building through several floors until it shot out of the roof but luckily without killing anyone. But my boss told me if you would put that machine outside, you could easily shoot small airplanes with it.

you're probably driving off the water in that autoclave with the vacuum feed as you cyclize the precursor from the polyamic acid into the fully imidized product.

What applications have you used those materials? I was making an experimental turned exhaust cowling for a helicopter, which is why we needed the higher service temp material. When I signed on to that project, I researched what Renegade had done to remove the deadly components of that resin, but I was still fairly cautious of it.

[–]epicGOPfail 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

back in the '80s (yes, '80s) polyimides were developed largely for the semiconductor industry. PI have great thermal properties, but are not very soluble or easy to functionalize. Those issues make them a bitch to adhere to, and in the VLSI app's, adhesion is critical.

So, there we were developing complicated cure schedules and even more complicated coupling agents and even MORE complicated diamines and dianhydrides. Some even gave water soluble polymers... ah, the visionary Corporate Americana that killed it all.

On the bright side the likes of HP and 3M were able to advance flexible circuitry a few years later using polyimide as substrate. You still see that on the inkjet print heads.

The hatch blew open, killing the two guys in front of it and was found almost a quarter mile away.

Reminds me of this accident: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byford_Dolphin#Diving_bell_accident

On 5 November 1983 at 4:00 a.m., while drilling in the Frigg gas field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea, four divers were in a decompression chamber system attached by a trunk (a short passage) to a diving bell on the rig, being assisted by two dive tenders.[5] One diver was about to close the door between the chamber system and the trunk when the chamber explosively decompressed from a pressure of nine atmospheres to one atmosphere in a fraction of a second. Five of the men were killed instantly; the other was severely injured.

The lower the psi value, the stronger the force of the vacuum?

[–]bonafidebob 140 points141 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

PSI is Pounds per Square Inch. Good old imperial units... but the thing to know is right there in the unit: "per square inch."

The bigger the area of the door, the more force on it. A 10 inch by 10 inch door will be 100 square inches, and so at 3psi that's 300lbs. A "man sized" 3 foot by 5 foot door (36 x 60 inches) will be 2160 square inches, and at 3 psi that's 6480 lbs.

A Newton is a measure of force. Approximately it's the force acting on a 100 gram mass, but technically its the force required to accelerate one kilogram of mass at one metre per second per second. The nice thing about SI units is they're all defined using other SI units so they all fit together.

[–]pkbooo 25 points26 points ago

Speaking of Newton/Pascal jokes...

Einstein, Pascal, and Newton are playing hide and go seek. Einstein is counting while Newton and Pascal hide. Pascal runs off and hides while Newton doesn’t move an inch. Instead, he draws a square around himself in the dirt. After Einstein finishes counting, he opens his eyes and says, “Found you Newton! That was easy.”

Newton says, “No you didn’t. You found Pascal.” He points down to the square in the dirt. “One Newton per meter squared.”

What's the difference in this situation? You're not doing unit conversion here, just trying to visualize a certain amount of force. Both units are force-over-area and equally useful for that purpose.

[–]Funk86 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So would a spacecraft's airlock door have some 30,000 pounds of force acting on it when the ship is in space?

No wonder people get blown out.

[–]bonafidebob 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I doubt the internal pressure would be a full 1 atmosphere, humans don't need so much pressure to survive. But, yeah, with a vacuum outside the spaceship walls and doors have to hold it all in. Commercial flights too, there's significant cabin pressure compared to outside air at 30000 feet up.

[–]gwot 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But really at maximum there is a delta-P of roughly one atmosphere. Outside pressure approaches a vacuum whilst the inside is roughly atmospheric.

[–]bonafidebob 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I looked it up and you're right, the ISS is at about sea level pressure.

[–]LarrySDonald 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hard to say. A standard jetliner used to keep a little below .5 atm. According to wikipedia they're changing it to more .83 atm now, but that's still a lot less than one and that's for passenger aircraft (I'm assuming military or spaceflight with accordingly "in good health" people can swing less). I mostly remember being told about it because of diving. Going to .5 atm is good and well if you didn't pre-load by chilling at 3 atm until your blood was full of nitrogen first, so there are some additional concerns if diving until you're maxed out and then suddenly getting on a plane.

[–]mololith_obelisk 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

for diving it is 1 additional atmosphere of pressure for every 10 meters of depth. being on an aircraft at 0.5 and experiencing rapid decompression to 1 atm is the same as diving 10 m deep and rapidly surfacing.

unlicensed divers are limited to less than 20 meters depth for this reason.

the purpose of an airlock to to get rid of that pressure when opening doors by changing the pressure of the chamber gradually

[–]Funk86 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, assuming the chamber between the inner and outer door is pressurized to 14psi, then wouldn't the outer door have the 30,000lbs from the air pressed against it?

Makes The Professor's statement of "Well, it's a spaceship, so it can handle anywhere between zero and one atmospheres" more significant.

[–]shaolin_monk 20 points21 points ago

I think it's worth pointing out that 3 psi (3 pounds per square inch) is in this case a measure of gauge pressure. Gauge pressure is zero referenced against the ambient air pressure, or atmospheric pressure. Atmospheric pressure is generally accepted to be 101.3 kPa (kilo Pascals) or 1.0 atm (atmospheres) or (14.7 psi) on Earth.

The absolute pressure inside the room (0 absolute pressure would be a perfect vacuum) would be ~ 17.7psi, and the absolute pressure outside would be ~ 14.7psi. This difference in pressure would quickly want to equalize when the seal is broken (door opened). So, absolute pressure is never negative, and is in fact never even = 0 in the real world. Gauge pressure on the other hand can be negative indicating a vacuum in the sense that there is less pressure inside the container than in the surroundings.

[–]AQUA2 11 points12 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Boiler and pressure vessel engineer here...

Atmospheric pressure is basically ~15 psi at sea level. That is always the pressure acting on a vessel or tank from the outside (assuming it's at sea level). On the inside, the pressure could be anything.

Case 1: If the interior pressure is higher than 15 psi, then your pressure vessel is doing what it needs to and is resisting bowing outward or exploding.

Case 2: If, however, that interior pressure is less than 15 psi (which could happen if you suck out all the gas inside the vessel), you have what is known as "partial vacuum". If that interior pressure is zero, then it's full vacuum.

In either case you have pressure on one side higher than the other. To find out the force acting on the vessel walls, what you then do, is, subtract the pressures to get the net pressure acting on the vessel. Now, knowing that pressure is force per unit area (and since we know the area of the door), we can easily calculate how much force is acting on that door.

While we're talking about pressure vessels, let's clear up a common misconception...that we pressurize airplane cabins so as to "balance" the inside pressure with the outside pressure.

Remember, the higher the altitude, the lesser the atmospheric pressure (since atmospheric pressure is basically due to the weight of the atmospheric "sitting" on top of us, and the higher our altitude, the lesser there is atmosphere above us, so the lower the pressure), and so to balance the pressure, we would actually need to LOWER cabin pressure to balance the outside pressure....except we don't do that. We actually do the opposite...the reason being that we, humans, are physiologically not accustomed to lower partial pressures of oxygen, and can faint if pressures are too low, so interior pressure has to be higher than exterior pressure.

So, yeah, an airplane is basically a pressure vessel. It needs to be designed to withstand the high interior pressures.

[–]bonafidebob 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The other option for airplanes would be to add oxygen. That's what apollo did. And that's sort of what happens if the plane cabin loses pressure, except you just get the extra O2 through a mask.

Worth noting that while the plane is at positive pressure compared to the air at altitude, it's still a lot lower than sea level pressure. It's just that the outside air is even more lower than sea level.

[–]Darklyte 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe in this situation we are looking at a pressure differential. Since it is a 5 psi vacuum, the pressure is ~14.7 psi externally (one atmosphere of pressure) and 9.7 internally. Since we're looking at a pressure differential, a higher value would result in a stronger force of vacuum since it is a scalar rather than a vector.

[–]punknoflowers 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So the door in the edit had an internal pressure value of 17.7?

[–]Darklyte 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

in the edit

A bit confused by that, but to cause a vacuum the internal pressure would need to be less than the external pressure.

Of the original comment;

Edit: Additionally there are a lot of people that don't know how pressure works. My friends dad lost some guys at work because they opened a hatch that was about the size of a door which was under 3 psi of pressure. It was something like 10,000 lbs of force when you did the math. Ah. I didn't see that. Yes, the internal pressure was much higher internally. It had no where to escape since it was sealed, but once it had a way out, it ripped it open even further to equalize. 17.7 PSI would be about right, when you consider pressure from an absolute (0 PSI being in space or a complete vacuum).

Really makes you appreciate just how badass we are to survive atmospheric pressure.

[–]malenkylizards 325 points326 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really...Our atmosphere is pushing against us in all directions, inside and out, so it's balanced. Dramatic things happen when there's a pressure differential, i.e., pressure inside is very different from pressure outside, like in that tank.

[–]Audioworm 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The probability of aliens, and the astrobiology that predicts possible characteristics is one of my favourite areas of biology. I collaborated with a biology masters student who was doing a project on life on other planets and she was looking at the damage of radiation on RNA.

We put several samples and exposed to ionising and non-ionising radiation. She was so enthusiastic about the subject and was happy to just to speak to people who cared as much as she did. It is a truly fascinating subject to look at.

[–]booksandpowertools 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

has there been any published research on the topic?

Also, science bonor achieved...

[–]JabbrWockey 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

....but that's the probability of RNA forming on other planets. Wouldn't astrobiology be more interested in other poly-silicon or -carbon based information storage systems forming?

[–]Audioworm 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was a look into the viability of RNA as a stable molecule in hostile environments.

I am no expert of astrobiology but from the lectures I have heard, the approach for information containing is two fold. Half looks at whether DNA/RNA is a standard across the Universe, and the other half look at substitutes.

It is nice to use RNA and DNA as we know they do the job, so you can play with them and look at their possibilities in space

[–]JabbrWockey 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not an expert with astronomy, but I would wager that if some self-repeating information molecules formed on other planets it would not be similar to RNA. It would be interesting to see what other molecules could serve as substitutes.

It's crazy, but nucleic acids are not too far from computer code, just that cells have extensive libraries of object and functions to call upon. I wonder how hard it would be to write a new poly-silicate system with accompanying regulatory proteins.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When you suck the air out of a plastic bottle it gets compressed because of the pressure outside - there is no air inside to make pressure as well so the bottle succumbs. Most people are probably familiar with this.

[–]mk5p 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Without pressure we wouldn't be able to survive, gas exchange in our lungs needs a pressure gradient.

[–]popsicle_time 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

that's kind of a convoluted point to make, considering the no pressure=no gas molecules anyway

[–]Revontulia 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

One fun fact that I remember from A Short History of Nearly Everything is that our bodies would be remarkable good at surviving pressure wise in the depths of the oceans. We are made mostly of water which does not really compress meaningfully.

Of course the various gasses in our bodies would kill us in those pressures. So, not perfect.

People should also take care when operating gas/liquid-gas torches and cutting implements. There are parts inside valves etc. which can act as a projectile and kill folks.

Nothing wrong with reading a manual or watching an instructional video before operating equipment. Looking like you already knew something is not worth potentially losing your life over a simple mistake.

I remember seeing the pressure wave from nuclear explosion models, and being surprised how low the pressures were, iro 10 to 20 psi - then doing the maths on what that means to a house/human body.

[–]discover16 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Judging by the hose coming out of the bottom, I'd say that they may have been pumping whatever was in the tank out, leaving no internal pressure. Atmospheric pressure then crushes the tank. That's 14.7 psi. A below comment mentioned a pressure door being blown off at 3 psi. Granted, the tank would cave before it was a complete vacuum, but there's the general idea.

I know a guy who worked on that show Smallville as the special effects technician or whatever. Essentially they did all the non CGI stuff in a shop. This reminds me of when he told me how Superman was going to punch a car and it was going to crunch like in this GIF. They built half of a car's frame out of aluminum, and then had cables that attached in a punching shape to the inside of the frame. So when Superman punched the car, they pulled the cables and the inside of the frame and the aluminum just crumbled like that. Pretty cool effect technique.
