That's not a square, it's a rectangle!

[–]phyK 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you know there is a major difference between these two?

"Rectangle" is a description a square, as well as other kinds of rectangles.

"Football" is a description for soccer, as well as other kinds of football.

how do you name a ballgame, in which one rarely touches a ball, football?

a square is a form of a rectangle, how is american football a form of football???

Football also includes Australian football, rugby, and others.

Although it is widely assumed that the word football, or "foot ball", originated in reference to the action of a foot kicking a ball, this may be a false etymology. The historical explanation has it that the word originally referred to a variety of games in medieval Europe, which were played on foot.[3] These sports were usually played by peasants, as opposed to the horse-riding sports more often enjoyed by aristocrats. This explanation is supported by the fact that the word football has always implied a wide variety of games played on foot, not just those that revolved around kicking a ball. In some cases, the word has been applied to games which involved carrying a ball and specifically banned kicking. For example, the English writer William Hone, writing in 1825 or 1826, quotes the social commentator Sir Frederick Morton Eden, regarding a game — which Hone refers to as "Foot-Ball" — played in the parish of Scone, Perthshire:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_%28word%29

Take any relevant reference resource (dictionary, encyclopedia, etymology guide, etc) and it will explain that "football" does not strictly derive its meaning from from a foot to ball contact.

Funny, I would have said the same comparison about American Football.

[–]Rad_Hazard 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But in football there are a great deal of points scored every game. And since I am an american living in america I will refer to soccer as soccer and football as football.

[–]killedyourcat 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If in soccer you were awarded 7 points for each goal soccer wouldn't really be that far behind. Although there are scores of 0 to 0.

You are a patriot, sir.

[–]CrashTestDumbass 0 points1 point ago

So, using the same wordplay as the OP, you're saying american football is a slut?

[–]Rad_Hazard 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, actually I've had that idea for a long time but I have never found the right place to express. I guess I was just too much of a pussy to make my own post... but that's besides the point. I wasn't using wordplay at all actually.

[–]CrashTestDumbass 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know you weren't, I was just using the wordplay used in the OP's screencap. How often points are scored is completely irrelevant.

Re-reading the OP and my comment, I suppose the same comparisons can't be made, since in football, it's people staring at each other's asses for two hours.

[–]Rad_Hazard 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think athletic contests are more exciting to watch if there are a great deal of touchdowns/goals/runs scored. There's more action involved that way. And I'm pretty sure that's the majority opinion.
Touche on the ass-looking comment.

A football (not American) player is one of the few sports players I'd care to actually call an athlete.

[–]kindofgay 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd hope that you are pretty amazing yourself to declare professional sportsmen not athletes

[–]Ramennov 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Having a body build appropriate for the particular sport one is playing professionally does not automatically imply that person should be considered athletic. The case of a sumo wrestler comes to mind. I've no pretenses about my body in that I know I don't have the build required to play American football, but I shouldn't have to in order to have a fitness ideal that differs.

Steven Jackson isn't a good example of a well-rounded athlete. There are people in this thread who could beat him in a foot race at any distance over 800 m, myself included. In the summer Olympics, that'd be four running events I would dominate him in: 1,500 m, 5,000 m, 10,000 m, 3,000 m steeplechase and the marathon.

American football players are bigger and faster than rugby players but don't have anywhere near the same level of stamina. The average NFL play lasts 5 seconds and the average NFL game has only 11 minutes of action.

Decathlete Trey Hardee has better physical tools than anybody in the NFL.

[–]TumbleDryLow -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Absolutely: it takes real cajones to force up fake tears when another player touches you even slightly.

(American) Football players morph their bodies into meta-human walls of meat. Is it natural? Fuck no. But who would you rather have on your side when these motherfuckers show up?

[–]konkydong 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

5 seconds of play.... break.... 5 seconds of play..... break. American football is soooo boring to me. Almost worse than baseball:/

[–]floatablepie 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A friend told me to give it a chance, so I flip over. After 10 minutes, I had seen 3 commercial breaks and 6 seconds or so of play. That was the end of that.

American football players have all kinds of protection on earth there could ever be. Imagine them without the cups, the helmets, etc. Also try and go on the soccer field without protection and have someone with giant buttons under the shoe slide and kick you with the buttons directly at the ankle.

[–]timidturtle 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And now imagine with all kinds of protection on earth still being rendered unconscious from a big collision. Yes, I would imagine getting kicked in the ankle would hurt, but getting hit by a 225 lb man trained to hit running full speed is not explainable.

It's about the buildup, the chase, the personalities of all the people involved. You have to work as a team to fight the other team, and know one is certain who will win until its over. You can try to do things a certain way, but any number of things throws a curveball that changes the course of events for the rest of the time.

[–]p0p0 1 point2 points ago

The only comparison between twilight and soccer is that they both have a lot of people acting really queer and being successful because of it.
