Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I feel slightly stunned seeing a IB survivor on reddit. I'm doing the IB right now actually, or it's more like the IB is doing me.

Hang on in there. IB is probably the hardest I have ever worked.

[–]MantheDam 1 point2 points ago

I survived IB too...five years out and still relatively normal. It's still the hardest I've ever worked, and I have a BA now.

[–]sambellc 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

my IB years were a blur of caffeine jitters and constantly being overworked and stressed. you'll come out more than prepared for, and maybe a little bored with, your average uni curriculum.

I still flinch at the thought of the Chemistry exam... eughh.

[–]alittlelady 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sounds just like my life at the moment...skipping school today to do three lab reports, write a reflective statement and study for my biology test.

At least thank god it's the weekend soon so I actually have time to study!

I'm taking Chemistry HL, should I be worried?

[–]sambellc 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I took Chemistry SL-- I just wasn't as invested in it as my other classes (focusing on HL's). Should be fine if your HL chem. teacher is consistently churning out students with average scores and keeping you on track! My chem. teacher was the bomb. I still feel bad that I possibly disappointed him with checking out by the time exams rolled around. Oh well.

Haha, skipping school not to have fun but to do MORE schoolwork, totally part of the unwritten IB code!

At least you're studying it. I have to read medical records sometimes as a lawyer. Today I was reading something and I realized that I could only understand the articles and prepositions in each sentence.

[–]hmmwellactually 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sort of the opposite for me. As a medical student who sometimes finds occasion to read law I understand every word then get done reading and think - "What the fuck does that mean?".

I got a grip when i spent 2 days writing up cells and interferons , TNFs etc and the different cells, and drawing arrows between them as they influenced each other until i could recite it.

As a former immunology teacher, I can guarantee that you either do this or it all makes sense a week before the test final.

[–]RedWave 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, at some point, it all magically make sense, you understand everything, the very nature of the universe is revealed to you!! but then 3 days later you completely forget how it works...

[–]interkin3tic 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That approach doesn't work with current research in molecular biology from my experience.

I eventually black out, and wake up with words on a page like "neurons, polarity, actin, microtubules, axon, centrosomes" with double-ended arrows between all the items with a question mark over half of them, with big red marker across the page "THEY HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE DO THEY?!?"

[–]-paradox- 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Any good resources you recommend that show a map of the cells and their interactions with each other, similar to what you drew?

[–]dragon_toes 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The point of writing them up is writing helps things makes it stay in your brain better. So if you have to puzzle it out yourself you'll remember better. Just saying. ;)

Ed: I thought that if I took the can, there was a good chance that I'd get caught, but even if I did get the Trilampathol to the proper authorities, Kurt would hire some powerful attornies who would dispute any charges brought against him or Mondo Burger by manipulating the legal system and the way America's court system is congested these days, it would take months to convict him of anything so I thought I'd take matters into my own hands and dump the Trilampathol into the meat supply, making Mondo Burger a victim of its own foul play.

Dexter: You thought all that?

Had medical immunology two years ago.. hell, it truly starts to make sense (in a practical way at least) once you've also passed pharmacology and pathophysiology, and are starting with the first clinical classes.

In any case, I must recommend this awesome piece of literature/entertainment by a bunch of Japanese immunologists and doctors: Your Amazing Immune System and How It Protects Your Body. It's pretty much the same as Janeway's Immunobiology (around 900 pages in a large format).. except it's done by the Japanese and thus in comic form.

The English translation is free and apparently immunologists around the world have been translating it recently. It's even available in Estonian.

[–]kingtrewq 1 point2 points ago

Wow, I am taking Immunology with Janeway's immunobiology right now.

Graduate level immunology gets worse in terms of lingo and jargon that people keep changing every year.

[–]Cammorak 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's even better when 3 labs discover the same thing at the same time and all name it something different. Then they go to conferences and argue why their name is more accurate than anyone else's. Then it gets a CD name and you have to comb the literature for 4 different names and their misspellings.

During my 3 years of bachelor degree in pharmacology, immunology is the only class I was aiming for a C and totally okay with it. It seemed like too much trouble and work to actually work for more than that. I think I got B-.

I remember when I was studying for immunology, at one point I took a mental step back and thought to myself, "wat". I thought it was funny that the slide was like "Think about this" and then presented something that I didn't even know what it meant.

it's all acronyms and brightly colored shapes. I loved studying it, but it makes no sense at all if you're not familiar with the subject matter.

That's how I feel, and I work in immunology. IL-17A, Gr1 low intermediate and high. blah blah blah, flow cytometry, lets fluorescently label it.

It took me one semester to take Immunology and the better part of the following year to actually understand what the hell I'd learned. That said, I had a hell of a lot of fun making cells eat each other and observing it under a microscope.

Hardest class ever. I think my immunology class started with about 90 people. 30 quit before the first week was over. Another 30 quit after the first test and I think only 15 of us passed the course. Good luck!

Man, immunology is the worst for that. There's too many new words. To make matters worse, my prof had a thick accent. For the first month of class I thought he was saying "MXZ" instead of "MHC". (Tip: study the diagrams. It makes learning the mechanisms so much easier.)
