1924 Reddit meetup.

[–]jakb001 83 points84 points ago

1924 4chan meetup.

FTFY

[–]Gotenks0906 47 points48 points ago

I can one up you with this 4chan meetup. If you don't want to watch all of it, then just watch 0:20 to get the point.

[–]vicschuldiner 44 points45 points ago

Those fucking late 90's/early 2000's goth pants...

[–]spirited1 17 points18 points ago

Made me cringe.

Also, don't link me to /r/cringe

[–]schniggens 113 points114 points ago

Funny how the three girls who are not flashing their tits are the only ones I want to look at.

[–]pieguyfry22 61 points62 points ago

Psh. They probably believe in that dignity bullshit.

[–]31stan -1 points0 points ago

Straight male here, I didn't really want to see any of those women's tits.

[–]itsnotatoomer 4 points5 points ago

I think our fat people can give their fat people a run for the money.

[–]ILikeBadgers 3 points4 points ago

Thanks, I suddenly feel more confident in my own appearance.

[–]NorskForce 130 points131 points ago

I think a few of these people are in the movie Freaks (1932). That's the full movie, enjoy

[–]aldude3 31 points32 points ago

GOOBLE GOBBLE!

From what I recognize there is Schilizie, Harry Earles, Daisy Earles, and Minnie Woolsley.

[–]Reactance 26 points27 points ago

One of us!

[–]regisgod 8 points9 points ago

Classic film.

[–]lpwaterhouse 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for share this!

[–]maximomore2 3 points4 points ago

Crazy, I was just reading about Johnny Eck a few days ago. It saddened me that him and his brother got robbed in their home when they were 76.

[–]Gizmo9682 2 points3 points ago

On my phone, commenting to watch later

[–]EggfordFord 262 points263 points ago

Jazz was freakish, sure. Jazz trios would get you banned from the radio. But female jazz trios? Ridiculous! Female jazz trios where they're all playing the saxophone? You could only find them at the circus, near the fat people.

[–]Olemcsnipey 105 points106 points ago

I read that as a fast talking man from the 30's.

[–]quackersRIP 41 points42 points ago

Who was also wearing high trousers.

[–]danceswithshelves 16 points17 points ago

and smoking a very long cigarette.

[–]Tasadar 12 points13 points ago

Reread it as such; A+ would recommend.

[–]Inessia 22 points23 points ago

not only a trio, they're triplets.

[–]Deto 4 points5 points ago

Maybe the act isn't that they play saxophones but how they play the saxophones.

[–]thisissam 4 points5 points ago

The saxophone itself is controversial and strange.

From an interview from NPR.

"And then in the teens...the Ladies' Home Journal wrote that the saxophone rendered listeners incapable of distinguishing between right and wrong and evil and good."

When Adolph Sax invented it in 1849, fusing brass and woodwinds, his instrument making peers attempted to defame, sabotage, and even burnt his workshop down, some say in an attempt to kill him. They feared its versatility would put them out of business when the French military decided to add saxophone to their ensembles.

So to have a set of triplets playing three saxes would have definitely been freak-show worthy.

[–]Blue-Black 150 points151 points ago

The mannequin look of the woman on the stool (bottom row, 6th person on the right) really creeps me out.

[–]Hash47 37 points38 points ago

She has some fine legs.

[–]erb047 98 points99 points ago

Apparently that's not a mannequin. Whoa. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violetta_(entertainer)

[–]lebiro 38 points39 points ago

Wow, I can't help but be amazed by the spirit of some seriously disabled people. You have to admire the woman who says "no legs, no arms, no problem" in the way she seems to have.

[–]GamerXR72 5 points6 points ago

It's not like she lost them. She was born without them. It's all she ever knew.

While screwed up from our perspective, to her it was just life.

[–]Quintote 29 points30 points ago

And what I find fascinating is that while our modem eyes see people exploited for deformities, but many of them were disabled enough that in a time with no social welfare programs or accommodations for disabilities, this was a way to make a living, and some of them made quite a comfortable living, too.

I saw a documentary about side shows many years ago that mentioned how moral outrage led to discontinuing freak shows, which left performers destitute. I'm not saying it makes it right, but to me it nicely illustrates that ethics can be complicated.

[–]Random_Link_Roulette 24 points25 points ago

Ah, Violetta must have lived in The Valley, below the rich who lived in The Hills...

I found her long lost relative Bob

[–]Catmand0 8 points9 points ago

Such an awesome and underappreciated show.

[–]bulbousaur 171 points172 points ago

Oh Wikipedia, you never fail to amuse

[–]ThadChat 9 points10 points ago

ಠ_ಠ

[–]Hart_Z_Whitman 1 point2 points ago

Bet she sucked a mean dick

[–]Shatophiliac 28 points29 points ago

"SHE COULD COMB HER OWN HAIR WITH HER MOUTH". Really? Please explain, wikipedia. Please explain.

[–]cutofmyjib 7 points8 points ago

Wikipedia: "Well the thing about that is...LOOK A DISTRACTION!" makes a getaway

[–]hypoid77 4 points5 points ago

Custom brush maybe?

[–]kensomniac 12 points13 points ago

I really wish there was more to her story..

[–]macguffing 6 points7 points ago

and was able to manipulate objects with her mouth enough to comb her own hair.

....how?

[–]andyhenault 0 points1 point ago

"She moved herself by hopping from place to place on the bottom of her torso, and was able to manipulate objects with her mouth enough to comb her own hair, dress herself, thread a needle, and sew."

I whole heartedly call bullshit on this.

[–]Sugar_Skull 2 points3 points ago

I'm friends with a remakable woman who has neither arms nor legs, and she does more than you can imagine. More than I do, actually.

[–]Tubehouse 5 points6 points ago

She's my favorite!

[–]crazystrawman 62 points63 points ago

You sure this isn't the Fall schedule for TLC?

[–]Frodoholic 4 points5 points ago

Seriously, TLC is the modern version of a side show, and feature many of these types of "different" people on their shows regularly (little people, giant people, and I think it's TLC who has the show about the conjoined twins).

[–]TrickyWon 64 points65 points ago

A majority of these people are freaks in 1924, and in 2012 they would be a touching story on National Geographic, with a YouTube video on the front page making us cry.

[–]ucbiker 65 points66 points ago

So the only difference is that people in 1924 were honest about why they're ogling them?

[–]PFCDoofles 30 points31 points ago

I'd say the availability of information about the conditions they suffer from greatly increases our capacity for empathy. In 1924 you had to accept the explanation given: that they were just weird.

[–]ucbiker 2 points3 points ago

I don't know if you need to know why someone has no arms or legs to feel empathy for that person. I mean yeah, I'm not so cynical that I won't say we've advanced from locking freaks in cages but I'm sure part of the appeal of Little People Big World is that midgets are funny.

[–]PFCDoofles 6 points7 points ago

You're told that someone is weird and you look at them in the context that they are weird, chances are you'll think "Wow! That's WEIRD!" Maybe you won't think worse of them for being weird, but you probably won't get beyond that.

If someone is presented to you as "brave" you'll do the same thing. Then you'll learn about their affliction, and the next time you see someone with that affliction you'll go "oh you poor person."

Maybe this doesn't describe you personally, but a human being tends to form these impressions completely based on presentation.

[–]TrickyWon 5 points6 points ago

Well put

[–]Wintopi 7 points8 points ago

These people made a very good living in a time when they would have been locked away. Many were married with families that they were able to support. They didn't need pity or tears, they just needed your dimes and your grandparents gladly handed their coins over for a tale to tell.

[–]Sugar_Skull 4 points5 points ago

This was true in many cases, but predictably, many working "freaks" were manipulated and/or abused by family members or employers. Many of them were physically and/or mental disabled to some extent, some hidden away with no education or chance to develop social skills, and some were locked up and treated by animals while their handlers took the money they earned.

Often things went better, though. Some would go in unlocked cages and pretend to be savages for the audience, then walk out after the show and interact normally. (It looks like one of the people in that picture is just a "savage from Africa".) Many found love and made decent wages, had children and enjoyed a normal or even somewhat better than normal life. Some were just dealt a rotten hand by show business. A freak show wasn't guaranteed to succeed, especially during the depression, and some famous freaks just faded from the lime light and went broke.

I did a lot of reading about freak shows a while back.

[–]BottleRocket2012 2 points3 points ago

NPR had a very moving documentary about what happened to a lot of the circus freaks. They basically said how there was a movement in America that made this seem like exploitation and abuse. In all the interviews with them, they said how they went from being financially independent and working with great friends to being completely dependent on the Government for disability payments.

[–]Bresdin 43 points44 points ago

Can anyone go through these people and point out why they are freaks. Just to have a comprehensive list.

[–]thebluesaracudas 102 points103 points ago

From here:

Ajax, the sword- swallower; unk, unk, seated: Schlitze, the pinhead (and star of Tod Browning's Freaks); unk; one of the Carlson Sisters; Major Mite, the smallest man on earth; Tom Ton; Slats, skeleton sheik; the other Carlson Sister; Jeannie Tomaini; Mlle. Cleo, snake charmer; Twisto, the human knot; and an unidentified trio of sax playing sisters.

Back row, from left to right:unk; Cliko, the African bushman; either Eko or Iko, one of the ambassadors from Mars; Koo Koo, the bird girl (also featured in the movie, Freaks); Baron Paucci, midget; unk; Jim Tarver, giant; the Dancing Doll family of midgets (Freaks); again, either Eko or Iko; unk; and Ho Jo, the bear boy.

edit: added links for ones that I could find

[–]rundll32_exe 91 points92 points ago

When I started reading that, I was wondering, "who the fuck is Unk Unk?"

[–]hippiekyle 15 points16 points ago

It took me a good 10 minutes to figure it out.

[–]aspiringvoiceactor 20 points21 points ago

Is it 'unknown"?

[–]hippiekyle 8 points9 points ago

that's my best guess.

[–]counterseven 1 point2 points ago

I don't know.

[–]thisisthecalm 10 points11 points ago

Also, giraffes

[–]devophill 9 points10 points ago

Also from that same blog:

(New information! Thanks to Rebecca Stith, we now know that the woman next to the Carlson sister is Violetta, the living shop window bust; and that the man next to Mlle. Cleo is Martin Emmerling, known as Laurello. Also, according to this website, that is not Ho Jo, but Lionel the lion-faced boy. The giant might actually be Jack Earle. He is definitely not Jim Tarver. - Bret)

[–]rosendito[S] 6 points7 points ago

Nice info. Thanks. I knew I saw some of them in the film Freaks.

[–]No_Please_Continue 8 points9 points ago

I feel really stupid. I read all of that and was so confused as to why some were named "unk"

[–]sigaven 42 points43 points ago

Okay, the guy who has his head turned totally backwards...wtf!

[–]greenforks 11 points12 points ago

Since the head is on a pivot joint I highly doubt its his head backwards. Probably more plausible that he could have had double shoulder joints and was able to rotate his arms completely around.

[–]schwuppdiwupp 11 points12 points ago

look at his shoes

[–]thexfiles81 20 points21 points ago

I didn't think any of these were too bad unitl I saw the torso person on the stool.

[–]celesteyay 26 points27 points ago

That torso person got married and I'm still single. Uff

[–]Sketchetera 59 points60 points ago

*Unk

[–]azgeogirl 6 points7 points ago

Thank you... I just spit iced tea all over my desk.

[–]wallsbecametheworld 10 points11 points ago

Did you just write "pedastool"???

[–]blakjak55 171 points172 points ago

The fat people are about as normal as you can get these days....

[–]kelloo 50 points51 points ago

Go to Denny's at 3PM and you'll find bigger people.

[–]Skwerley 2 points3 points ago

or any time of the day.

[–]JimmyFixIt 3 points4 points ago

Also go to the cinema and watch what people eat, that explains it all.

[–]kelloo 5 points6 points ago

I worked at a movie theater concession stand for three days. There's a good reason why I didn't work the forth day.

[–]hinckley 18 points19 points ago

They fired you for poor spelling?

[–]funkydopeloven 6 points7 points ago

he forgot one(!) letter. not sure if nazi or asshole.

[–]forks4spoons 4 points5 points ago

Recently, I was completely aghast at a local playhouse performance when a rather... rotund... lady sat leaned in her chair (literally, if you'd followed her skeleton it would have looked like the hypotenuse of a triangle) and drug out popcorn, peanut butter m&m's and a soda from her purse.

It makes me cringe.

[–]WaitThisIsntDigg 111 points112 points ago

Its not their fault though, theyre big boned.

[–]Woolio 45 points46 points ago

How does that skeleton support that weight?

[–]dead_ed 185 points186 points ago

Badly.

[–]papaya_war 14 points15 points ago

HA

[–]greeed 3 points4 points ago

Poorly.

[–]celesteyay 17 points18 points ago

Lots of joint pain

[–]Shatophiliac 4 points5 points ago

It doesn't. At about 34 years, the fat crushes the heart, causing a "heart attack". At least thats what I got out of my circuit analysis class.

[–]lebiro 6 points7 points ago

Wow this really puts things into perspective actually. Ew.

[–]Sugar_Skull 2 points3 points ago

At Bodyworks they had a vertical slice of a normal person next to an obese person, showing the size of the layer of body fat under their skin. It was pretty insane. Just inches and inches of fat before the muscles.

[–]Calibas 15 points16 points ago

Instead of freak shows we just go to Walmart nowadays.

[–]ireland123 26 points27 points ago

Speak for yourself America.

[–]mackinoncougars 120 points121 points ago

We're America, we speak forever everyone.

[–]anymooseposter 9 points10 points ago

Ohhhhhh, burn!

[–]thickrickdick 43 points44 points ago

Like Ireland is the picture of health.

[–]ireland123 17 points18 points ago

We're actually suprisingly thin for a nation of alcoholics.

[–]Skwerley 31 points32 points ago

alcoholics have smaller appetite, and poor digestive systems.

Source: I have a serious problem

[–]Penglishman 7 points8 points ago

ALTERNATE ENDING. . .

sauce: I have a serious problem.

[–]logic88 2 points3 points ago

that's what i was going to say. they got nothing on fat people today.

[–]mudmaster 0 points1 point ago

Yeah except they aren't on some sort of mobility scooter.

[–]Airazz 3 points4 points ago

I want to visit US some day, but I'm scared.

[–]slapded 7 points8 points ago

Almost as bad as im scared to leave my toothpaste at home when i go to the uk

[–]FZRaven 15 points16 points ago

Is that D'Argo in the upper right?

[–]mirthquake 5 points6 points ago

Seriously though, what the heck is going on with that guy's face? And also the two dreadlocked guys who look identical. Did Barnum just say, "Hey, you two brothers. If you let me put glue in your hair I'll give you a shiny dime!"

[–]kneejerk 26 points27 points ago

They're albino africans...

[–]rundll32_exe 9 points10 points ago

Very easy to tell in a black and white photo.

[–]Ch3t 66 points67 points ago

Correction, customers waiting outside Wal-Mart for the Black Friday sale.

[–]hetmanivan 6 points7 points ago

Martin Laurello is the guy who could turn his head around like that: http://sideshows.wikia.com/wiki/Martin_Laurello

[–]Radioactive24 15 points16 points ago

Holy shit, there were 2 Sideshow Bobs.

[–]konblivion 9 points10 points ago

Ah the good old days when obesity was strange and unheard of.

[–]mwittman 4 points5 points ago

This was a photograph taken by the NYC-photographer Edward J. Kelty, who specialized in large format photography and took a lot of pictures of circuses in the 1920s and 1930s. There's currently an exhibition on the history of the circus in New York City at the Bard Graduate that features some of Kelty's work: http://www.bgc.bard.edu/gallery/gallery-at-bgc/main-gallery.html

[–]spicy_eagle 21 points22 points ago

Can you just imagine the orgies?

[–]New_World_Era 15 points16 points ago

I don't want to...

[–]counterseven 7 points8 points ago

You just did.

[–]ronfromcny 5 points6 points ago

I'd pay 5¢ to see that.

[–]MrXhin 6 points7 points ago

I wonder what freaky things those 3 saxophone girls do.

[–]Sugar_Skull 2 points3 points ago

They were triplets, that's enough to be in a freak show if you've got a good act, and it looks like their act was the saxophone.

[–]s-drop 3 points4 points ago

TWO! sideshow Bobs?

[–]mthomaseddy 2 points3 points ago

Right?! Are those dreads?

[–]THE-COLOSSAL-SQUID 3 points4 points ago

Karl Pilkington would love this!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TFhZG7JKoI

[–]colourfulwatermelon 5 points6 points ago

The man on the lower-right, to the left of the three girls, looks like Mr. Bean...

[–]silvernails 5 points6 points ago

And let's not forget: Don't pet the giraffes!

[–]MaebeBluth 4 points5 points ago

Wow, John Goodman's older than I thought...

[–]SopeBoxDerby 2 points3 points ago

Black guy in a gorilla suit with a violin.

Wat.

[–]Namelok 2 points3 points ago

Giraffe photobomb's at their best.

[–]Obnoxious_ismyname 2 points3 points ago

Fun fact: Anthony Bailey as in Barnum & Bailey is my Great-great-grandfather, I have a good grasp on the history of the circus, if anyone is curious

[–]pinkerton13 3 points4 points ago

Gooble gobble, gooble gobble, one of us, one of us.

[–]hookeslaw 2 points3 points ago

TIL Circus freaks didn't go out of style, they are just all shopping at Walmart.

[–]funkydopeloven -1 points0 points ago

i want to see this show

[–]wolfesquire -1 points0 points ago

Why are giraffes freaks :(

[–]CeladonRollick 1 point2 points ago

Is... is the man on the far bottom right standing backwards with his head turned all the way around? That is quite a fantastic skill.

[–]leelons1 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on a poster-sized print of this?

[–]greattsauce -1 points0 points ago

Just your typical day at Wal-Mart.

[–]fauxmerican 0 points1 point ago

is that woman a dress form!?

[–]naturalinfidel 0 points1 point ago

is that rowan atkinson? (third from right front row)

[–]barske 1 point2 points ago

here are two more photos from that shoot:

shot 2

taken from a website about Jim Tarver the giant

[–]rogue_ger 1 point2 points ago

I like the implication that girls who play alto sax are freaky. This verifies some personal experiences.

[–]Rex__Kramer 1 point2 points ago

This resembles my extended family in our Christmas photo.

[–]TheOne1919 0 points1 point ago

The little people were cast in a pre-code film called "freaks". Excellent film

[–]Kallemanne 0 points1 point ago

[–]RogueLieutenant 0 points1 point ago

[–]PurpleDance 0 points1 point ago

mfw I see them all as people.

[–]ninapeloso 0 points1 point ago

sideshow bob is not a freak.

[–]jteagues 0 points1 point ago

The guy in the center on the bottom row looks like a 1924 Ralphie May, or Ralphie May looks like a 2012 him...

[–]joeynana 0 points1 point ago

How did you get my highschool class graduation photo? That's me... The handsome one.

[–]BigMountainFudgecake 1 point2 points ago

Didn't know Chris Christie was a freak in 1924...

[–]OralGape 0 points1 point ago

Rule 34, please.

[–]skeeto111 1 point2 points ago

You know these were by far the coolest and funnest people to hang out with. I bet there parties were wild and wonderful.

[–]canarchist 0 points1 point ago

Please do not feed or touch the giraffes.

[–]sukrieke 1 point2 points ago

funny how the obese male and female turn from freaks to normal in less than a century.

[–]Shatophiliac 0 points1 point ago

More like "Circus of Americans". :P

[–]smedley_redblood 0 points1 point ago

Do not touch the giraffes.

[–]AliasUndercover 0 points1 point ago

Looks like there may actually be one or two in there who have actual interesting conditions. The rest look like typical Barnum "sucker born every minute" fare.

[–]lillowtree 0 points1 point ago

Not just one, but two Sideshow Bobs!

[–]calm_collective 0 points1 point ago

Are the guys that look sort of like Exeggutor's just albino rasta's?

[–]Pinstrip 0 points1 point ago

Giraffe.

[–]Hunill -1 points0 points ago

[–]GIANT_FROM_SPACE 0 points1 point ago

[–]ahh_yiss 0 points1 point ago
