Cinemagraphs

These pictures go beyond just animated gifs, they are photographs with a bit of movement. The movement should be about atmosphere, not action. Inspired by the iwdrm and From Me to You blogs.

The distinction between Cinemagraphs and gifs

Here are a few how to's on how to make your own Cinemagraphs. If you have any others, message the mods and let us know! The more accessible this medium, the better.

Some guide lines:

1) No regular .gifs. That defeats the entire purpose of this subreddit. They will be removed. Could someone conceivably frame a still image of the cinemagraph and hang it on the wall, because it would also make a great photograph? If the answer is no, the mods will delete the post, because it's a ONLY a .gif and not a cinemagraph.

There are many disagreements on what constitutes a cinemgraph. At the end of the day, quality of the image (resolut and content-wise) and, almost 100% of the time, some isolation of motion is necessary. There are very few exceptions to the latter and yes, the former is always going to be somewhat arbitrary. Such is the nature of assessing an artistic medium.

2) They don't have to be flawless, but do your best too. The point of this subreddit is high-quality Cinemagraphs.

3) Make sure to put [NSFW] tags. That should go without saying.

4) If you found it on stumbleupon or on a major site, chances are it's already been posted. Take the 5-10 seconds to search and see if it's been clearly posted.

FAQ (Will be updated as more arise)

1) How do I make a cinemagraph my desktop background?

2) "Do I need to give credit/cite my posts?" YES. If the cinemgraph is not your original, you must post the source and give credit. It is unfair to the creator not to.

I really don't think is the right subreddit for this.

I honestly don't get how something like this ends up at +50 points. I'm guessing people just don't realise what sub they're in, and upvote neat gifs on their front page. I wish the mods would step in. Maybe some flair for content that doesn't fit the bill?

People who comment and know what the subreddit is about in most subreddits are not the majority of the voting population.

Everyone else just votes if they like it. Pretty much the reason you need pretty active moderation to keep a subreddit focused.

[–]snoharm 2 points3 points ago

Right, that's exactly why I'm asking for more active moderation.

It belongs more on /r/fifthworldpics

Very sorry for how long it took to remove this. Sick today, now I can't sleep so I'm doing some house keeping haha

This isn't a cinemagraph.

[–]nourez 38 points39 points ago

This isn't a WTF either. Double disappointment.

The one thing that really attracted me to cinemagraphs was the incredible image resolution you can only find in photos.

I'm usually the first to defend large motion, but this just doesn't fit at all. Cinemagraphs aren't just smooth loops. They're captured moments - stillness in motion.

Good thing he has plenty of them to go around. Also, not the right subreddit.

did not expect that

This was in WTF? Well fuck. Time to unsubscribe from WTF.

[–]Cayou 1 point2 points ago

Well, every month or so there are a few days of "let's bring /r/WTF back to its roots", but what those roots actually are changes every time, because the hive has a fickle mind. Last time it turned into several days of gory pictures, but every now and then the temporary "back to the roots" movement actually has people post pictures that make you go "woah, what the hell is going on here". And then it's back to pictures of lolcats for a few weeks.

.....C-Cayou?

[–]Cayou 0 points1 point ago

...yes?

Oh, hah, I get that a lot. No connection, though :-)

That looks like barrels of fun

[–]Half_Time_Show 0 points1 point ago

I don't know why, but this reminds me of Mortal Kombat.

[–]brownbearclan 0 points1 point ago

Probably a mortar.

[–]encapsulator 1 point2 points ago

I've seen this before as part of a set.

The only thing I remember is that this wasn't the best one of the series.

[–]Rosenkrantz_[S] 0 points1 point ago

Well...sorry?

42cm gun? 420mm, really? With walls that thin and a barrel that short? That's definitely not any kind of gun. I think that's just a transport barrel mounted on a cart.
