lol @ calling an inanimate object an automaton. wit isn't stupidity, either.

[–]DownvoteDaemon 7 points8 points ago

She is in so many good movies.

[–]AnnieIWillKnow 19 points20 points ago

[–]rspeed 13 points14 points ago

She didn't just tell him she thought he looked like a waiter, she pretended to mistake him for one.

[–]cptnrandy 79 points80 points ago

[–]hierocles 28 points29 points ago

I, for one, appreciated the correct response from Downton Abbey.

ITT: More people who've seen Harry Potter than Downton Abbey.

Edit: What this guy said. ⬇

[–]herpty_derpty 164 points165 points ago

ITT: People who call it Downtown Abbey

[–]Crabrubber 39 points40 points ago

TBH it is the cooler of the two abbeys.

[–]bunburya 67 points68 points ago

ITT: More people who've seen Harry Potter than Downton Abbey.

I don't see how this should be surprising at all.

[–]CarolineTurpentine 47 points48 points ago

As a huge Harry Potter fan, Maggie Smith is 1000000x better in Downton Abbey.

[–]Zagorath 25 points26 points ago

I think her role is much better in Downton. In Potter the writing for her character was less interesting.

[–]CarolineTurpentine 27 points28 points ago

Is what I meant!

Professor McGonagall has her moments but Violet Crawley is a badass old Dowager Countess who doesn't give a fuck. I find that it is really hard to convince people to watch Downton because they assume it'll be boring.

[–]ckryaninko 5 points6 points ago

I'm pretty sure Maggie Smith could take a shit on screen and be fantastic.

Watch "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" and you'll understand!

[–]MaximumParsimony 5 points6 points ago

Listen, I don't care where you put her, she will kick the shit out of any role, and I will with pleasure watch it. Within reason, of course.

[–]abdomino 7 points8 points ago

I feel stupid for asking, but what does ITT stand for?

[–]dwaxe 6 points7 points ago

In This Thread

[–]guydudeman 8 points9 points ago

ITT: We learn what ITT stands for.

[–]aco620 8 points9 points ago

Let's see here. "The series, set in the fictional Yorkshire country estate of Downton Abbey, depicts the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants after the post-Edwardian era — with the great events in history having an effect on their lives and the British social hierarchy in general. Such events depicted throughout the whole series include the news of the sinking of the RMS Titanic in the first series; the outbreaks of the Great War, Spanish influenza pandemic, and the Marconi scandal in the second series; and the Interwar period and the formation of the Irish Republic in the third series."

I dunno, even as a history buff, I think I'd still rather watch Harry Potter. Maybe Wikipedia just isn't making a good sell of it though.

[–]slthytove 56 points57 points ago

I avoided Downton Abbey for a long time because it seemed ridiculously pretentious. My wife finally convinced me to give it a shot one day when I was stuck at home sick, and I proceeded to binge on the first two seasons over a period of several days. It's about relationships and mystery and intrigue. It's about people trying to figure out their place in a weird world. It's also really addictive.

[–]GuavaTree 4 points5 points ago

I've been trying to get my girlfriend to look at it.... is something wrong with me?!

[–]no_fatties 4 points5 points ago

Not at all. It's highly entertaining. Your girlfriend would like it as well if she gave it a chance I'm sure. It's a drama and can be quite cheesy (rarely) but it's very amusing and the acting is top-notch.

[–]RadicalSally 2 points3 points ago

I think because it's so reflective of our current state of affairs. It starts almost 100 years ago, right after a major war/conflict. The economy is slowly recovering, and the lower classes are starting to rise up and go "hey now, all you super rich people, why are you rich? just because you were born that way?" and the rich are trying desperately to hold on to power and keep the aristocracy "pure". Not to mention the obvious age gap - the old want to keep things the way they are. They believe in tradition, etc. The young (especially women) are seeing a whole new world of possibilities open to them and have no desire to carry on the outdated traditions of their parents. They want equality and freedom for all.

Essentially, we see parts of ourselves and our families in Downton.

[–]ENKC 16 points17 points ago

I find it much more entertaining than Harry Potter. It would be a statement of plain fact that it's written for an adult audience, for a start.

[–]KazamaSmokers 24 points25 points ago

I would have given her the Emmy just for her reaction to the swivel chair.

[–]mmmmmmmmichaelscott 5 points6 points ago

She's a good sailor.

[–]6justice6 19 points20 points ago

You read it in her voice.

[–]Ianras 6 points7 points ago

OP is a f... Who am i kidding, there is no need for that sort of ad hominem attack.

[–]clandohoome 49 points50 points ago

Can we also remember that pop culture references are no substitute for wit either? Thanks Reddit.

[–]DrJulianBashir 25 points26 points ago

☆☆☆ The more you know... ☆☆☆

[–]spicyvagina 20 points21 points ago

"Profanity is the crutch of the inarticulate" - as my High School teacher used to say.

[–]cdskip 4 points5 points ago

Hmm.

I both agree and disagree. Ultimately, profane words are just words, and can be used to communicate just as well or badly as any others. But they are often used as a substitute for a most sophisticated expression of feeling, I will absolutely admit that.

It's similar to meme-speak, really. Something emotionally affecting appears on Reddit, you'll see "Right in the feels" approximately 800 times, and it's absolutely a cheap substitution for a more thoughtful expression of how the poster has been affected. A string of swears might be effective in communicating anger, but it robs the reader or listener of a chance to more fully understand the reason and context for the anger.

On the other hand, I often find that profanity can help to clearly express emphasis and intent in informal writing on the Internet. There are certainly more sophisticated ways of communicating emphasis and intent, but in, say, comments on Reddit, I don't think that shortcuts are particularly problematic. You're already hampered by many of the limitations of the format; under those circumstances, a crutch can be quite a useful tool rather than something that must ultimately hold you back.

[–]mleeeeeee 7 points8 points ago

Perhaps, but that's no argument against well-used profanity.

EDIT: Downvoting is the crutch of the inarticulate.

[–]heymrk 56 points57 points ago

This is why Bill Cosby is my favorite comedian.

[–]Sand_Coffin 44 points45 points ago

For me it's Jim Gaffigan. He has only a handful of swears in all of his standups and it's amazing.

[–]lemonpjb 17 points18 points ago

Jim's next album should be called "A Handful of Swears."

[–]Sand_Coffin 11 points12 points ago

Oh he's anti-vulgar...

[–]librarianzrock 10 points11 points ago

Now he's making jokes about his jokes....I don't think that's funny at all.

[–]RyanFuller003 35 points36 points ago

And, conversely, why I find Kat Williams incredibly unfunny.

[–]PhiladelphiaIrish 18 points19 points ago

It's hard to laugh when the comedy central broadcast is one continuous beep.

[–]RyanFuller003 8 points9 points ago

No kidding. It's not just distracting, it's downright annoying. If I wanted to listen to that much high-pitch beeping, I'd listen to the emergency broadcast system on a continuous loop.

[–]Greeceshallriseagain 10 points11 points ago

Kat Williams is embarrassingly unfunny. He's a terrible, terrible comedian.

[–]pornmonger 25 points26 points ago

I personally find the glorification of being ghetto unfunny.

[–]karmagod13000 10 points11 points ago

Sure... Pornmonger

[–]RyanFuller003 5 points6 points ago

I mean, he's being ironic with his onstage character. Even knowing that, he's fucking obnoxious. He's like Larry the Cable Guy except much more profane and making fun of black stereotypes instead of rednecks.

[–]LOOKIN_ASS_NIGGA 0 points1 point ago

THE GHETTO IS ALL WE GOT LEFT

[–]CaptchaInTheRye 3 points4 points ago

The swearing isn't why I find Kat Williams unfunny. He just tells idiotic jokes.

[–]Othy 6 points7 points ago

And Brian Regan.

[–]Farisr9k 14 points15 points ago

And why Daniel Tosh is my least favourite.

[–]heymrk 2 points3 points ago

Other than the fact that Tosh simply isn't funny and gets all of his material from Reddit?

[–]smartbomb314 17 points18 points ago

That's just his tv show. His standup is simply shock humor.

[–]crustyandhercomputer 5 points6 points ago

You realize Tosh's show is about taking videos from the internet and making jokes about them, right? Which is sort of exactly what Reddit does?

[–]RedRoostur 3 points4 points ago

Wut. Are you saying he gets all of his standup materiel from Reddit? Or are you confusing hosting Tosh.O with his standup?

[–]binaryecho 5 points6 points ago

Dice.

[–]JorgeGarrido 5 points6 points ago

tsss what are you playing board games or sumptin tsss

[–]Mussbrolini 39 points40 points ago

This reminds me of a teammate I had on my college baseball team. He had just struck out, and the pitcher got fired up, gave a fist pump, and yelled "Sit down!"

My teammate lost his shit and started screaming back, mostly "fuck you!" and similar vulgarities.

The umpire yelled at my teammate (who is walking back to the dugout) "Hey, you can't talk to him like that!"

Without hesitation, he whips back around, points his bat at the ump and yells back "Yeah? Well you tell him I said fuck you!"

*Edited for spelling

[–]FDboredom 20 points21 points ago

That type of witty reply would be something that popped into my head five minutes after the event.

[–]not_me_but 8 points9 points ago

Happens to me so often that I finally learned the name for it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L'esprit_de_l'escalier

Unfortunately for me, my wife suffers from no such setback and hands my ass to me regularly if I actually engage in a skirmish of wit.

[–]Icountmysteps 2 points3 points ago

My wife is a very kind, sweet woman, but when she wants to, she can hold her own. It's usually unexpected and I'm left looking like this :O I have always been pretty quick-witted when it comes to verbal skirmishes, but with her I am defenceless.

[–]podank99 5 points6 points ago

you just described why i no longer like Family guy. used to be good. now it's just vulgarity in place of jokes.

[–]WaterAndSand 5 points6 points ago

When I was in high school, our bus route snaked through an old ragged crime-riddled neighborhood that was a decrepit shadow of its former self. Abandoned buildings, graffiti, and rough times everywhere.

In the middle of this scenery one would never want to be a part of, written over other graffiti in silver and black, was the drop of wisdom "profanity is a sign of a weak vocabulary" and I've always fucking remembered it.

[–]Virginal_Anxiety 72 points73 points ago

Can someone please tell Louis CK this?

[–]bro_b1_kenobi 13 points14 points ago

He actually complimented Seinfeld for never swearing.

[–]Subduction 67 points68 points ago

I think he really has gone off the deep end with this. I honestly don't mind a comedian using any words or dealing with any topics, but he seems incredibly focused now on just being as stunningly profane/shocking/disgusting as possible.

I like him a lot and have been following his career closely from day one, and this hasn't always been the case. He needs to reel it in, it's getting a little hacky.

[–]bunburya 41 points42 points ago

I find a lot of comedians get like this after a while. It's like they run out of good material, or they just realise it's easier and more profitable to be vulgar.

[–]Punkwolf 14 points15 points ago

I feel this is what happened to family guy.

[–]Yohnstoppable 27 points28 points ago

Sarah Silverman is the poster child for this

[–]Homeschooled316 5 points6 points ago

I think for someone to be a poster child for this example they would had to have been known for something other than vulgarity to begin with.

[–]mattlikespeoples 13 points14 points ago

Dane cook, anyone? Oh, I'm sorry. You said good material.

[–]binaryecho 7 points8 points ago

you should change comedians.

[–]vaginal_cream 5 points6 points ago

But the bits about being a father are really nice. Maybe profanity is the way to go about describing how tough it is to be a father, I dunno; but he conveys the message to the audience very well.

I'm not disagreeing with you completely; he does need to turn down the language a little bit. But some of his skits are so much better with the vulgar language.

[–]be_mindful 3 points4 points ago

even the dad bits are like that now though. the whole thing about when he was taking a crap and his kid crapped in front of him and fell in her own crap. pretty weak in the long run.

the "sometimes dogs are brown" joke was a genuinely funny way to look at fatherhood, the falling in crap joke was just being vulgar. both were funny but dick and fart jokes are forgettable and don't last.

[–]bowlforthedude 2 points3 points ago

Have you seen his show? I agree that his stand up can often be vulgar for vulgar's sake but I've never got that feeling from Louie

[–]Subduction 3 points4 points ago

I'm referring to his stand-up.

[–]guninmouth 4 points5 points ago

Honestly, I think it is part of his act. Everything he does is laced with reality, whether it's beautiful or disgusting or both. He's like George Carlin in a lot of ways. He can tell a beautiful joke, yet it's laced with vulgarity, and although some people don't like it, it's part of his allure and why he is popular in his realm.

[–]SockofBadKarma 8 points9 points ago

Someone should remind stand-up comedians of this fact.

[–]ProtusMose 5 points6 points ago

Amen. It's not 'edgy' and most of the time it's detracting from the material, not complimenting it.

[–]GodspeakerVortka 4 points5 points ago

Maggie Smith is the shit.

[–]LowSociety 31 points32 points ago

It sometimes amazes me how much Redditors appreciate shock-value humor. Most of the time it's just the same jokes over and over again and therefor not shocking at all.

[–]HeiniHeinrich 11 points12 points ago

True, shock-value humour has become so institutionalized and established, that it has become almost oppressive to other humour. It's almost like the pigs in animal farm all over again.

[–]bunburya 20 points21 points ago

I did NAZI that coming!!!!!!!!!!!!

[–]_Godwins_Law 3 points4 points ago

But I saw your comment from a mile away.

[–]junkit33 6 points7 points ago

It's the teenage demographic that has come to dominate the site.

[–]theworstisover11 10 points11 points ago

Sometimes vulgarity can be used in addition to wit. You know what they say though, if the other person starts screaming and cursing you have probably won the argument.

[–]AncientSummoner 11 points12 points ago

All the upvotes for the best Downton Abbey quote. I love it

[–]Ze_Rydah_93 4 points5 points ago

upvote because dame maggie smith. all other arguments have officially become invalid.

[–]sassi-squatch 3 points4 points ago

God I love that actress. She's got some of the best lines ever on Downton Abby. I figure she and 'Roger Sterling' on Mad Men have the best acting jobs going right now. The writers give them pure gold.

[–]krowface 2 points3 points ago

Vulgarity is the linquistic crutch of inarticulate motherfuckers.

[–]mrpotatoes 28 points29 points ago

Think of vulgarity as sentences enhancers instead. I like to think of it that way was because my speech is bedazzled as FUCK. [edit] Phone fix.

[–]master_of_none 5 points6 points ago

I like to think of it that was...

cringe

[–]mrpotatoes 5 points6 points ago

I was on my phone. If you have it in your heart can you forgive me?

[–]Mimsy_borogoves 33 points34 points ago

But vulgarity more often than not takes away from what is being said, except for those whom have only just discovered swear words and realise the novelty is actually paper thin.

[–]rabbidpanda 17 points18 points ago

I had an English professor who always said "vulgarity is a crutch, you should find a way to show that emotion without simply drawing from the well of words we know to be foul; strike out into new foul territory."

But then there was a girl from New Jersey, who demonstrated how possible it was to breathe new life into the same cussin' we'd all grown up with.

[–]Mimsy_borogoves 16 points17 points ago

I think vulgarity should be used in statements of passion. But when people say "hurr durr look at those fucking goose eggs hurr durr." it is just unnecessary language. It adds nothing to the message, for the passion that is implied in use vulgarity is simply not there, and they're only goose eggs for fucks sake. They're not that special.

[–]midnightsbane04 22 points23 points ago

Nope, you're wrong because fuck you.

[–]ANONANONONO -1 points0 points ago

Is that a line from Zach Galifinakis?

[–]DCM 14 points15 points ago

Spongebob

[–]stargazingskydiver 15 points16 points ago

Stephen Fry begs to differ.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_osQvkeNRM

[–]HeyOP 29 points30 points ago

He doesn't seem to disagree with the bare statement that vulgarity is no substitute for wit. He does seem to challenge the assumption that vulgarity excludes the presence of wit.

[–]pigburn 9 points10 points ago

I'm sure op didn't mean it like that. He's not saying we should all stop swearing, hes just saying that "OMG LOL penis penis penis LOL" isn't funny.

I was once in a Peter Gabriel concert and he was introducing a song by speaking about cycles, about the moon and its influence on us. People laughed when he mentioned menstruation. I was a bit embarrassed to be part of that audience.

[–]5plendiferou5 2 points3 points ago

Without stodgy prudes, I imagine swearing wouldn't be half as fun as it is.

[–]irkendna 6 points7 points ago

So true--jokes can still be funny without profanity injected needlessly in them.

[–]Obsolite_Processor 23 points24 points ago

Profanity is the last bastion of the ignorant motherfucker.

[–]Farisr9k 1 point2 points ago

You were just sitting on this, waiting to jockey it on to the nearest, vaguely relevant comment to the top because you know reddit loves Stephen Fry.

Anyway, here's the video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_osQvkeNRM

[–]shoegazer666[!] 8 points9 points ago

Dude, that quote is an amazingly apt retort to the quote posted by the thread starter. Why you be hatin' yo?

[–]HipstersaurusRex 3 points4 points ago

yeah, i was going to also post the video but i am at work and cant use speakers to check it.

I know reddit loves Fry, and im glad i could post it because im sure a lot of people who love him have also upvoted this post. and now they be all like 'shit, i love fry, but i also love what that harry potter lady said'

[–]ohnowait 15 points16 points ago

I was hoping that when I scrolled down it read something like, "So go fuck yourself."

[–]Kendow 2 points3 points ago

Nothing succeeds like excess

[–]slapded 2 points3 points ago

brickleberry...

Tosh you reading this?

[–]Miro360 2 points3 points ago

Well Said Ma'am.

[–]crustyandhercomputer 1 point2 points ago

Neither is putting the words on a picture or quoting movies.

[–]MR_WITTY_RESPONSE 3 points4 points ago

I know right

[–]_the13thchamber_ 2 points3 points ago

Funny, this is how I feel about most of the comedians these days.

[–]DingDongSeven 3 points4 points ago

"Don't be defeatist, dear. It's very middle class."

Nice.

[–]caroline_reynolds 2 points3 points ago

Oh c'mon guys, she doesn't even know what a weekend is.

[–]Puninteresting -1 points0 points ago

Well, no one ever said it was a substitute, bitch.

[–]perpetual_motion 2 points3 points ago

Furthermore, randomness is no substitute either.

People seem to think that if they combine vulgarity and randomness it must be hilarious. You know of what I speak. All those "WTF" links to "stories" on 4-chan...

[–]Zomby_Goast 2 points3 points ago

This is how I feel about "aggressive" infographics.

[–]floobie 2 points3 points ago

I totally heart Maggie Smith.

[–]CarlosValdosta 2 points3 points ago

Upvote for Downton Abby ref.

[–]elbruce 2 points3 points ago

"It may be a poor substitute, but it makes a fine sauce."

- elbruce

[–]patio87 2 points3 points ago

Downton is such a great show. It's so interesting seeing how people lived so completely differently than today, only 100 years ago.

[–]JustZisGuy 2 points3 points ago

Fuck yeah, Dame Maggie Smith, fuck yeah!

[–]acendude 6 points7 points ago

My grandpa always said that it showed true talent in a comedian if his or her act was "clean." Then again he had very racist and crude humor himself.. but hey, do as I say, not as I do..right?

[–]Subduction 8 points9 points ago

Remember, if a punch line is plain or simply not funny, add "fucking" and italics. That makes everything funny:

"Because it's a refrigerator."

"Because it's a fucking refrigerator."

[–]rockemsockemrobot 7 points8 points ago

Witty vulgarity, though, that's what's up dude.

[–]clemsonk 3 points4 points ago

"Well, you started it."

[–]skinturtle 3 points4 points ago

Vulgarity is stupid especially when it comes to comedians....to hear it sounds like a layer of excrement every time they talk. The only people who think it's funny are the ones who have the intelligence level of a flea and are hooked on phonics.

[–]EltaninAntenna 4 points5 points ago

Oh, fuck off.

[–]dinguslovett 1 point2 points ago

Drawn Together is a perfect example of this. That's why South Park is better; it includes both vulgarity and wit.

[–]manark 1 point2 points ago

it's often paired with raging fanboyism

[–]jayme0227 1 point2 points ago

Sometimes a well timed vulgarity can be quite powerful, whether it be in a comedic sense, or a dramatic one. The rest of this thread, though, proves your point.

Wit gets you karma but vulgarity gets you the bitches amirite

[–]lmiah -1 points0 points ago

What if I am both? ...motherfucker

[–]plexxonic -1 points0 points ago

You are better off with vulgarity. Half the shit us redditors spew is far from wit no matter how good the grammar is.

This is how I felt when I watched Brickleberry

[–]BillWeld 1 point2 points ago

Brevity is... wit.

Haha, I said fuck in the middle of an argument, and few comments later, the dude replies with this saying. It was completely irrelevant to the point I had just made and I was like "?"

NOW I get it.

A.M.E.N.

[–]JERRJEROD -1 points0 points ago

But on Reddit, wit exists in its most basic form.

[–]MaxPower88 -1 points0 points ago

Where's only_says_fuck_yeah when you need him...

[–]FamilyDuck 2 points3 points ago

that's how I feel a lot of the time. especially toward people who love south park.

[–]Fudanchi -1 points0 points ago

Aaaaand this is at the top of reddit right now.

[–]josephanthony -1 points0 points ago

Context is everything. One post's vulgarity is another post's hilarity.

[–]trashed_culture 0 points1 point ago

And wit is no substitute for knowledge.

[–]notenoughwits 2 points3 points ago

I completely agree (yay, my username is valid for once!)

[–]DieFappy 0 points1 point ago

Notice how no one in this thread swears all of a sudden?

[–]i_h8_hippies -2 points-1 points ago

sounds like someone is a little butthurt.

[–]amitnagpal1985 -2 points-1 points ago

Maggie Fucking Smith. I want to her wit behind the barn and make it pregnant.

[–]K931SAR 1 point2 points ago

Judging by the majority of user names, most of Reddit would disagree.

[–]rootbeerhead -1 points0 points ago

POTATO_IN_MY_ANUS would be inclined to disagree.

[–]tehlolkid 0 points1 point ago

You should learn to forget what I say. I know I do.

If r/McSweeney's existed, you should have cross posted it there.

They've gotten a lot of mileage out of "a foul mouthed rant on a subject that is uncharacteristic of a foul mouthed rant"

[–]Lurking_Grue -1 points0 points ago

Fuck yeah!

[–]SleepyEel -1 points0 points ago

Lady, I only speak two languages, English and Bad English.

[–]StarTrekMike 2 points3 points ago

Wow, many posters on this thread proved your point.

[–]Bartleby1955 1 point2 points ago

...but it will do in a pinch

[–]Kerrits 0 points1 point ago

But making infographic recipes with words like shit and motherfucker makes it just soooo funny and original!

[–]MapleToothpick -2 points-1 points ago

What the motherfucking shit are you talking about, cocksucker? Completely gratuitous use of fucking curse words language is a totally acceptable substitute for having no fucking idea what you're talking about. Yadig, shithead?

[–]LatkaGravas 1 point2 points ago

Vulgarity is no substitute for wit.

You're the Vulgarian.

[–]rdldr1 -2 points-1 points ago
