  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Thanks for that link. The HD version on a big screen is nice.

[–]Ichthasen[S] 9 points10 points ago

Great link, thanks for sharing

[–]AceJohnny 2 points3 points ago

I also like this dreamier (but much shorter) version made from the first timelapse to come off the ISS. Notice how some of the sounds are tuned to what's on screen.

[–]Ergot25 3 points4 points ago

That's awesome! I just sat there hypnotized.

[–]Nick4753 3 points4 points ago

[–]enderman 3 points4 points ago

wow, that lightning looks pretty awesome

[–]stabsthedrama 3 points4 points ago

The whole time I watch this I'm angry I can't pinpoint what any location is. It really puts the actual earth into perspective instead of just looking at the mapped-out globes we're used to looking at.

[–]Trust_an_Engineer 1 point2 points ago

Some areas are very difficult but the lights of cities are helpful at getting an idea, as well as, large bodies of water (Mediterranean, Great Lakes, etc.).

[–]Trust_an_Engineer 0 points1 point ago

The lightning strikes from space look awesome! Anyone have an idea on what the winding sting of continuous light at 4:37 is? It's somewhere else in the video too. It was kinda fun trying to figure out where geographically the ISS was flying over throughout the video. Awesome visuals but hate the soundtrack.

[–]twincam 3 points4 points ago

Every single time I read/hear the words Aurora Borealis i think of this.

[–]aveaida 14 points15 points ago

They say it's the Aurora Borealis, but it's really the planet's Lifestream.

[–]Wayfarer21 1 point2 points ago

And here comes meteor...

[–]literal_reply_guy 8 points9 points ago

The highest thing on my 'things to do before I die' list is see the Aurora Borealis in a remote area, preferably a forest clearing. Just lying down and taking it in. To me that seems like it would be such an awesome moment.

[–]B12Mega 3 points4 points ago

I saw the aurora from the outer banks of N.C. back in '04! Couldn't believe my eyes, and it looked just like this example, with dancing green curtains and a big red dot higher in the sky! Yes. Awesome. Do it!

[–]Ichthasen[S] -1 points0 points ago

Space seems pretty remote ;p

[–]Exzentriker 5 points6 points ago

Looks like the shield is still holding.

Space will have to try harder.

[–]JustifiedTrueBelief 0 points1 point ago

Let's not give it any ideas, I like space right where it is thank you very much.

[–]mike_dogg 3 points4 points ago

There are MANY spectacular views from the ISS (International Space Station) For the space geeks out there here is the flicker account where they stitched the pictures taken to make the time lapse posted above. Enjoy! :)

[–]JTrain17 3 points4 points ago

[–]Ichthasen[S] 2 points3 points ago

mmm, Steamed Hams

[–]AppleTStudio 2 points3 points ago

Looks like the Green Ending for Mass Effect 3, except way more beautiful because it's real!

[–]Caboose727 0 points1 point ago

Science is beautiful.

[–]BurningSquid 2 points3 points ago

What I love is the fact that when you look at the Borealis, you are basically looking directly at the magnetosphere. If you can imagine this for a moment:

The sun releases a blast of solar wind with a ton of energy raging toward the earth, the part of the magnetosphere that is toward the sun valiantly absorbs the energy and actually slightly breaks off and "attaches" to the magnetic field of the sun.

The magnetic field then is pushed to the opposite side of the earth and "attached" to the part of the magnetosphere that is away from the sun. When this happens the field lines on the side opposite of the sun actually shift down and cause the field line closest to the earth to intersect with the earth itself. This causes particles to be disrupted and start colliding in the atmosphere causing what we see as the Borealis.

The interesting thing is that depending on the size of the solar wind you can get Borealis at extremely low latitudes. SCIENCE FUCK YEAH.

[–]jamesave 1 point2 points ago

Is the aurora borealis also happened on another planet?

[–]silentl3ob 2 points3 points ago

[–]PoliticallyConcerned 1 point2 points ago

I posted the exact picture months ago and got maybe 20 upvotes. I don't understand this site.

[–]Elementium 0 points1 point ago

peak times usually indicate posts popularity. If you posted and no one was on to see it, it won't get upvoted.
