she might be Buddhist?

[–]hpclone25 91 points92 points ago

We must remember that too many people don't know the origin of the Swastika.

[–]almondj 26 points27 points ago

She's certainly sending some mixed signals here, is she buddhist or in support of the third reich? Because a few of them are backwards.

[–]Ijustneedonemoretry 29 points30 points ago

Turn them around the way you wan't and you'll get what you want

[–]RebelTactics 15 points16 points ago

I just did the math. This checks out.

[–]blot101 -1 points0 points ago

I'm not sure what wan't is. way not

turn them around the way you way not and you will get what you want.

[–]splintercell 15 points16 points ago

Hindu Swastikas face precisely the direction Nazi swastikas face. Buddhists use Sauwastikas(backward facing Swastikas). There are dozens of those(Swastikas) in an average Indian household.

[–]Priapulid 17 points18 points ago

What are you some kind of Swastikologist?

[–]kriggs5033 2 points3 points ago

Someone called for a Swastikologist?

[–]Crazy4sixflags 4 points5 points ago

My boss who is Indian has one hanging on our front door at work as a good luck charm. I tried to tell her that most people don't see it as good luck.

[–]splintercell 3 points4 points ago

My Indian friends got stopped at one of the border security check points because they had swastika drawn on their car as a good luck charm, the border security agent was really amused to see a bunch of Indian dudes with swastika symbols.

I am sure in the coming years(with increased indian population), Swastika symbol would become totally uncool for Neo-nazis to display.

[–]JHarman16 0 points1 point ago

They become Swastikas when viewed from a mirror, and vice versa. Also the person you see in a mirror that people assume is their reflection is really the bizarro you. Just something to think about that.

[–]hpclone25 10 points11 points ago

I hope she is a Buddhist Nazi.

[–]thatoneguy889 16 points17 points ago

[–]pseudotype 4 points5 points ago

[–]llcbdavis 0 points1 point ago

yeah. people who've been living on the moon. with their eyes closed. and their fingers in their ears. she knows. look at her eyes...

[–]thelastcurrybender 0 points1 point ago

why are people thinking that the swastika originated with Buddhism? it came from Hinduism.

[–]DMagnific 0 points1 point ago

Actually, the Nazis believed it to be an ancient religious symbol. They didn't go to some Asian country and say "Hey, we like this symbol and what it stands for, let's use it!"

[–]hpclone25 5 points6 points ago

I know this, but too many people I have met don't know the spiritualism behind the Swastika. The simply see it as a symbol of violence and hate, to which it is quite the opposite.

[–]pseudotype 4 points5 points ago

well, the Germans took care of the meaning of the symbol pretty permanently. You can't really unbake that cake (or those people).

[–]googlezurusername 3 points4 points ago

ZING!!

[–]insomniak79 -1 points0 points ago

The only reason the swastika will be linked to Nazism is due to the fact that it occurred within the last century and that people alive today were personally affected by it.

The swastika as a symbol has lasted for thousands of years. Do you remember what the battle flag of Spanish Empire looked like? 200 years from now the Nazi flag will just about be equally as forgotten, as a mere footnote of history.

[–]pseudotype -1 points0 points ago

Really? Do you know anything about who is writing the history of the modern world? The genocide of Jews during WWII is headed toward a third book in the bible at this rate.

[–]HANS_BLIX_NOOD 0 points1 point ago

It's such a cool symbol we really need to try and reclaim it from the Nazis. Start putting them on your cars, doors, clothes etc - take the power away from the haters and get people used to seeing them again.

[–]signing_to_say_this 5 points6 points ago

Also she may be Slav pagan.

[–]Cerfius 8 points9 points ago

still makes them swasticookies

When my great-grandmother joined the Nazi party in 1934, she used to try and fuck around with a lot of the Gestapo men. One of the men refused to have sex with her and she turned him in as a homosexual. The SS relocated him to Buchenwald.

[–]yourpenisinmyhand 7 points8 points ago

I love all the people saying "The swastika used to mean something something a long time ago..." as if that changes anything about what it means in present day. You know damn well that when 99% of the world sees a swastika, they think of Nazis.

[–]vonbw 2 points3 points ago

You know damn well that when 99% of the world sees a swastika, they think of Nazis.

Not to be contrarian, but at my recent grandmother's funeral, we were given a funeral wreath with a giant swastika within. It was from family and I assure you that they weren't trying to insult us or anything of the like. This happened in sunny southern california. In fact, no one batted an eye at the wake of ~100.

I actually don't think that the majority of the world recognizes the swastika as a symbol for the nazi regime. WWII was mainly a western war. Your statement would be much more accurate if you were replace, "world," with, "western world." Even then, neonaziism isn't very big. I don't necessarily think that most people assume hatred from the symbol lest the context makes it so.

ninja edit: I meant to say that the nazis were generally all but absent in the far eastern front. When my grandparents talked about WWII, they talked about the japanese and chinese, not the nazis. I didn't mean to say that WWII was restricted to europe and the US. I simply meant to say that today's eastern countries wouldn't necessarily have much reason to recognize nazi symbolism. To them, the nazi war crimes are as important as the boer war crimes.

[–]yourpenisinmyhand 0 points1 point ago

I"m referring more to the teens that discovered the alternative meaning (original meaning) and suddenly decided to plaster it all over for the pleasure of going "Nuh uh, you're stupid for thinking it's offensive because in India..."

As far as the cultures that originally had this symbol, nobody should take that from them. And, yes, I mainly mean the western world.

[–]draco4300 9 points10 points ago

dude the nazi party was not socialist, it was fascist.

[–]svens_ 9 points10 points ago

That's the official name. A nazi is a supporter of the national socialist party. Hitler was leading the NSDAP, the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (national socialist german workers' party).

[–]theaceofjs 0 points1 point ago

Nazi party = Nominally Socialist Nazi party member = Blatant Fascist

[–]BakulaSelleck92 4 points5 points ago

But in America, Socialist = everything bad

[–]Thizzlamic 3 points4 points ago

The Fascists hated the Socialists...

Socialism and fascism are on the opposite sides of the spectrum.... Just saying.

[–]luke37 0 points1 point ago

National Socialism is what Nazism is actually called.

Don't blame the OP.

Blame Hitler. Then Drexler, the previous chair who named it. Then yourself. Then Himmler.

[–]lochlainn 0 points1 point ago

Then the Zionists, Illuminati, and Girl Scouts.

[–]basec0m -1 points0 points ago

[–]asstits 0 points1 point ago

[–]glass_hedgehog -1 points0 points ago

They might be Buddhist cookies, or cookies to put on maps in Japan to pinpoint "you are here."

[–]Dud3wtf 1 point2 points ago

[–]MrLovelife 1 point2 points ago

Careful, Nona! Backwards swastikas make the baby Hitler cry!

[–]DirtyFuckingMind 0 points1 point ago

Do you think she's into greek?

[–]tommyschoolbruh -1 points0 points ago

Those aren't Nazi swastikas, even if that was her intent. Use this easy to remember formula to figure it out.

Nazi's were very very right wing, as such, their swazis point to the right, not the left.

[–]TheKert -1 points0 points ago

You could be right, except that those swastikas aren't all the same direction. It seems that about half are one way, and half are the other.

[–]ohheythatguy 0 points1 point ago

Great to dunk in milk!

[–]spikeshouse33 1 point2 points ago

where do you find this kind of cookie cutter?

[–]drmockelfish 0 points1 point ago

I baked cookies for your Nazi party.

[–]dasdingo 0 points1 point ago

They look more like gingerbread men that have flung themselves from off the roof of a burning building.

[–]FrankCashio -1 points0 points ago

Its a good luck symbol. the Nazis adopted it 1920s it doesn't make it theirs . Fuck the Nazis who said they get the swastika now.

[–]OnlyBrainLeft -1 points0 points ago

But... those are Buddhist swastikas

[–]wargasm40k 0 points1 point ago

Damnit only three of them are turned right. She is obviously jewish, to the oven with her!

[–]Watchwolf 0 points1 point ago

I don't care if you are a Nazi or a Buddhist. Cookies are cookies, man...

[–]Watchwolf 0 points1 point ago

Also, does this mean everyone who bakes the standard "O" shaped cookie is Japanese?

[–]rrssh 0 points1 point ago

It does.

[–]jeppest 0 points1 point ago

They're not all Nazi cookies. Some of them are pointing to the left which I do believe is some sort of sun symbol.

[–]rrssh 0 points1 point ago

What is flipping over.

[–]DaemonJerky 1 point2 points ago

OH SHIT, SWASTIKAS. I've never seen anything more /r/wtf material.

[–]HardcoreHazza 0 points1 point ago

In German, the Nazi Party translates to National Socialist German Workers Party.

[–]whatapest 0 points1 point ago

[–]JoeyHollywood 0 points1 point ago

What if she's a holocaust survivor and as symbolic revenge she puts nazis in the oven?

[–]wonderpickle2147 -1 points0 points ago

Nazi swastikas have the legs pointing the other way. They made their swastikas the opposite of peace (war) by mirroring the swastikas known to mean peace.

Those cookies are not for Nazis.

[–]Anatidaephobia 2 points3 points ago

Flip them over.

[–]for_kicks -1 points0 points ago

One time at grandma's house my dad decided to take down on of her many boxes of letters and keepsakes to go through them because 1) his family has no concept of boundaries and privacy and 2) I think he believed her mind was deteriorating and wanted her to refresh her memory or at the very least talk about her life so he would feel closer to her when she died.

So we're going through this box. It has a long of stuff from school, and I mean from kindergarten and up, little projects and papers, it was pretty cool. I take out this 3rd grade report on "Indians." It was on green paper, hand written with elaborate decorations on the cover.

I open it up, expecting a late 1920's take on Native Americans. They was two sentences, well written, but it was surrounded by huge swastikas. There were 4 huge ones, 1 large one in each corner, an entire boarder of them, and smaller swastikas littering the page like polka dots. I showed my dad, immediately thinking "Omg grandma's a Nazi" and he thought that too. He didn't say anything for awhile but I finally spoke up, "Grandma. Why did you draw swastikas all over your report?"

She takes the paper and looks it over, shrugs, and says, "I just thought it looked cool. It was a popular sign." She's very aloof, especially in recent years, but it's still weird to think about swastikas doodled everywhere on her school work.

Moral of the story: you may think your grandma is a Nazi, but she might've just been a stupid kid.

[–]inmyotherpants79 -1 points0 points ago

Swastikas, or whatever the are called in various parts of the world, were extremely popular as symbols until Hitler comandeered them for the Third Reich.

[–]let_them_burn 1 point2 points ago

Meanwhile in Argentina...

[–]Verynicholas -1 points0 points ago

its actually a peace symbol until she turns the pan at a 90 degree angle.

[–]guy_lovejoy 0 points1 point ago

[–]scarr3g -1 points0 points ago

Looks like Navajo crosses to me.

[–]SlenderGranDad 1 point2 points ago

Just to say the Nazi's were fascists and hated socialists.

[–]Indexius 1 point2 points ago

fascist? I thought nazis were fascist.

[–]Picardy 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, Nazism is a variety of fascism. The actual name of the Nazi Party (in English), however, was the National Socialist German Workers' Party, I assume in an attempt to appeal to the working class of the time. The party was of course vehemently anti-socialist in practice.

[–]Indexius 1 point2 points ago

Picardy? like a borrowed major I at the end of a piece?

[–]Picardy 1 point2 points ago

Naturally :)

[–]Indexius 1 point2 points ago

Nice! I just learned about those today In my theory class.

[–]MetalikZX -3 points-2 points ago

That's not socialism symbol, it's a nazi swastika!

[–]TheJackalope231 1 point2 points ago

National socialism, as in Nazis.

[–]drippinganalwart -2 points-1 points ago

FYI, National Socialist is not a synonym for Nazi. From wiki:

Parties in various contexts have referred to themselves as National Socialist parties. Because there is no clear definition of national socialism, the term has been used to mean very different things. Since the rise of German Nazism, which called itself "National Socialism", the term has been used in Europe and North America almost exclusively by political parties with combined authoritarian, racial and nationalist views. However, in other parts of the world, which had little contact with German Nazism, the term "National Socialism" is sometimes used by parties that define themselves as socialist and patriotic, without being racist. In addition, the term was also used by non-racist groups in Europe before the rise of Nazism.

The more you know...

[–]go-rot-in-a-sewer -2 points-1 points ago

[–]tdogg8 0 points1 point ago

[–]Mavrocordat -2 points-1 points ago

I think communists are socialist and nazis are fascist. There is a difference

[–]rrssh 0 points1 point ago

I think you enjoy knowing words and their connotations, often sacrificing common sense to show it.

[–]Dura_TV -1 points0 points ago

There is a very important difference between nazism, socialism and communism. They are all ideoligies, as are facism, capitalism and so on.

Don't start mixing them and imply that socialism (which actually is a functional system) is like nazism. I makes you seem stupid and intolerant.

[–]Picardy 1 point2 points ago

Yes, that's right, but the actual name of the Nazi Party (in English) was the National Socialist German Workers' Party. That's what the image is referring to.
